map route animation options?
[Post New]

I'm in the process of editing our US 2014 road trip and I was wondering about the approach I should use to creating animations on map images to show our daily progress. I did this a couple of years back with PD 9 using the titling program and plonking down asterisk characters to trace our route. It worked fine, but I wondered if there were better options with PD 12.

Thanks for any advice.

_Angus_,
In PD 12 you will find the animation/drawing tool.

If you want a second method, you can download the free Route Generator.

When you are finished, let's see the result!

Hi _Angus_ -

Just to add to Barry's two suggestions:

If you choose to use PDR's drawing/animation tool, make sure you take a look at Cranston's helpful tips on cleaning up the lines on your map - http://youtu.be/akUsQvOpbso

If you choose, Barry's Route Generator idea, this thread may help - http://forum.cyberlink.com/forum/posts/list/38489.page

Thanks Barry, I've checked out the clip, I will investigate it myself in PD 12 and see how I get on with it.

edit:

Thanks Tony also.

I'm a bit discouraged. I didn't think the route generator looked great, on the clip I found, and I found Cranston's masking tips a bit cryptic. I'm reluctant to install a new paint/photo program though I have access to Photoshop which I tried to use for this. I use Photoshop a lot at work, but I actually know very little about layers and masks, and I assume layers (not mentioned in the clip) are required, and is "transparent" the same as putting the opacity to zero?

The other issue with this method (I think) is that I'll be starting off each daily chapter of my video with a zoom into the map, and then the route animated, and I'm using pretty big old files so that it can zoom in and look good. If I could get this mask thing to work I assume I'd be using different versions of the same map for each day.

At the moment my previous method of zooming into the map and fading in asterisks from the titling software is quite attractive. The mask method looks a bit more professional, but also quite a lot more involved.

Hi _Angus_ -

Don't be discouraged! If you can take on a US road trip, a little old map animation isn't going to faze you!

I was thinking about your plonked asterisks idea... and then tried to apply that in Particle Designer with a blinking red dot.

It's just another possibility (attached - the little WMV didn't handle the zoom too well).

Hi Tony - thanks, I like the idea. I must confess, I've not so much as peeked into the Particle Designer, I will have to have a look and see if I can work out what's going on. I'll try and upload a clip of my current asterisk method later.

I shoved a clip of my asterisk plonking method on youtube, Tony.

I like your plonk! Nice simple idea & easy to execute.

Here are some other options done in PiP Designer - http://youtu.be/-uH15JoQFSc

The templates are on DZ:
The Blinker - http://directorzone.cyberlink.com/detail/135969016
The Slider - http://directorzone.cyberlink.com/detail/135969015
The Pulser - http://directorzone.cyberlink.com/detail/135969014

Personally, I'd still use the Route Generator method with a mask applied - has a cleaner look to me.

Cheers - Tony
