PD11 MP4 and LG smart TV

My sister lives next door and has a new LG smart TV. Since she only has over-the-air TV, i thought about streaming video or recorded TV shows for her with my DLNA router. Actually works really well although I had to get a better wifi extender.

The problem -- The LG smart TV can play back many formats. I decided on MP4 for file size, etc. I quickly discovered that all MP4 files are not made the same! The LG TV wouldn't play MP4 files produced with PD11. All it shows is a thumbnail with a question mark.

Using Media Info, I noticed that the MP4 files created with PD11 had a format=Sony PSP. I then created another sample file using a free shareware converter and MP4 format='base media'. This file played fine.

Is there any way to change this in PD11? It certainly renders faster. Intel i7 4770k, 16GB, GTX1060 3GB, Two 240GB SSD, 4TB HD, Sony HDR-TD20V 3D camcorder, Sony SLT-A65VK for still images, Windows 10 Pro, 64bit

I noticed your post because I've been struggling to produce a video I could put on a USB stick for my LG TV. I've tried and failed a number of times over a couple of years but it was never important enough for me to persevere. However my last attempt was finally successful I used MP4 at 1920x1080 25p PAL (as I'm in the UK). The quality was well up to my needs so that's what I'll use in future for this purpose.

I've had a look at the mediainfo output for the file that plays perfectly for me and yes it does say Sony PSP format but as I said, it plays fine. Presumably you're selecting the NTSC option?

yes, but I chose 720p for streaming wirelessly. I'm not knowledgeable enough to determine the difference between the two files. I also noticed that PD111 also creates VBR variable frame rate MP4 files.

I may try 1080p, but would have to use lower bitrate to stream it. This is something that will be watched only once and deleted so i don't want to spend a lot of time creating the files either. Ah... not quite the same as my situation. I'm using a memory stick and the USB slot on the TV. My trouble in the past was that my videos were always recognised as video files but then when I tried to play them I got an error message from the TV claiming it was an invalid file.

This is the info of the file that plays succesfully (I hadn't checked before but it appears to be CBR as opposed to your VBR):-

Try AVC H.264 (.m2ts) you have many resolutions to choose. 1280x720p is one.
If the TV will accept WMV files try a WMV. WMV is smaller file size than MP4.

WMV is my preferred output filetype but the TV wouldn't have it at any cost!

And we live in the most technological time. You would think a TV set could handle WMV.

What does the TV manual say for Video Formats?

They don't claim support so I can't complain. Anyway as I said I'm happy having sorted it out for myself now.

As far as the OP is concerned, I don't see any option to set whether the encoded file is constant or variable bitrate in PD so I'm intrigued as to why GGRussells' file came out as variable whereas mine is constant. I've not delved into custom profiles, mine was 'straight out of the tin'.

Guess you haven't read about the latest update to WMV issues (caused some output to be half black)? Never liked that format much. This TV does support it though.

I do have some files that I shot on my Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 tablet which is variable frame rate and they play on the TV. So I have no idea what is going with the PD11 files. Why do the PD11 files say Sony PSP?

The files from the free video converter are all constant frame rate. Also has a batch convert. Maybe slower than PD11, but the files do play on the LG TV. Intel i7 4770k, 16GB, GTX1060 3GB, Two 240GB SSD, 4TB HD, Sony HDR-TD20V 3D camcorder, Sony SLT-A65VK for still images, Windows 10 Pro, 64bit

Did some tests using the nature.mpg file and using Media Info to check the format profile.

I created a custom Profile but left defaults. Profile type Main / Entropy coding-CABAC. But this is what I get instead:

Video
ID : 1
Format : AVC
Format/Info : Advanced Video Codec
Format profile : Baseline@L3.1
Format settings, CABAC : No
Format settings, ReFrames : 4 frames
Format settings, GOP : M=1, N=29
Codec ID : avc1
Codec ID/Info : Advanced Video Coding

I tried Baseline/CAVLC and High profile. All output encoding seems to be the same. Even though I selected MAIN or HIGH, Media Info says the file was Basline@L3.1

The files that do play on the LG TV states Main@L3.1, CABAC YES, Reframe 1
Not sure if this IS the cause, but the only thing I can find that might.

I converted a load of VHS to MPEG which all played fine on my LG 42" LED TV (some over 10GB). However when I converted all the files to MP4 (480p PS format) only the files less than 1GB played.
Very odd but may be useful to you guys to know. An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind... make sure you get them all!

I've been using a shareware app to convert my Media Center .wtv files to MP4 which is working fine so far. But still have out of sync issue with Fox network which broadcasts at 720p @59.97fps. No matter what software I use, the audio is not in sync with video. Really odd even though the .wtv file plays fine. Have you tried the Microsoft way?

Then I still have to convert dvr-ms to stream to LG TV. Dont' know why MS decided to use proprietary file formats for Media Center. Has always been a pain.

I'm fairly new with this program, but I've been doing some experimenting and here's what I've discovered FWIW. I've always been converting old TV shows recorded in Windows Media Center to MP4 for viewing on a laptop, but I've learned that converting the same file to MPEG-2 with the same settings results in a file that's only slightly larger and noticeably better. For instance, a 3:12 clip converted to MP4 weighs in at 38.7 MB while the same file converted to MPEG-2 is 39.8. I've tried both files on my 60" HD TV, and the MPEG-2 file is noticeably better, so for new projects I'm probably going in that direction. BTW, my TV is a Vizio and it has no trouble with MP4, MPEG-2, M2TS, etc., with the USB ports, but I usually watch clips using the Windows Media Center player on the computer, hooked up to the TV with an HDMI cable.

So far as the initial conversion from WTV is concerned, it's a pain in the backside for me too. I've found the best way to approach this is to convert the WTV to MPEG-2 via some other means before bringing it into PD11. In my case, I use my old copy of Nero Video, which I was using before PD. I can convert the file to the exact resolution I want there and then I can bring it into PD11, edit it and save it to MPEG-2 or MP4 at the same resolution. Rather time-consuming but works for me with what I think is the best possible file. If I'm in a hurry I'll import the WTV directly into PD11 and proceed, but I usually use the other procedure. I stream TV shows to my sister's house next door using DLNA server on my router. I have cable and record a few shows for her to watch. I'm trying to cut down conversion/edit time. She watches the show and then it gets deleted.

I used to record on VHS tape and then moved to DVDs. She recently purchased a LG smart TV. Thought this would be easy, but has been more of a headache. LOL Intel i7 4770k, 16GB, GTX1060 3GB, Two 240GB SSD, 4TB HD, Sony HDR-TD20V 3D camcorder, Sony SLT-A65VK for still images, Windows 10 Pro, 64bit
