Can I use a laptop for PD11?

Somewhat sadly, being a little bored over the holidays, I produced (just for this purpose) a very, very rough cut video of a dive from egypt. Also sadly, I seem to have left the camera on quite a lot, which therefore gives a dangling view of the reef and seabed and can make one quite nauseous.

The 720p30 version is here if anyone wants to be sick.
http://youtu.be/qOAcJW5c5AE

I produced both the 720p version and a 1080p60 28mbs .m2ts version from my 720p camera clips.

I also took some 1080p60 .mp4 clips and produced a 1080p30 .mp4 video of traffic in the road outside.

17m length

Simple video,
random fades on each clip,
a copyright .png
One of the standard vacation intros/outros
smartsound track

No shadow edit files
Editing was fine but slow
preview was very laggy but just about useable

The real downside was rendering time
1080p60 .m2ts 8hrs 24 mins
720p30 .mp4 2hrs 18min
1080p30 .mp4 3hrs 13mins

Specs
PD11 Ultra 2110
XP Home SP3 32 bit

Laptop
Dual core 1.6GHZ intel T2050
2Gb RAM
6.5 Gb free space
128Mb total display video

Conclusion
PD11 does actually load, run and produce a basic video to a number of output qualities on a very basic spec laptop.

PS Ironically, despite producing them, the laptop does not play the 1080p versions very well, they go into slomo - do I need to upgrade my video card?

Cheers
Adrian

Sorry, posted the link before I'd checked it had completed.

Should be OK now - why would you want to view it anyway?

Nice video vn800rider. I have edited and render on a i5 2410M CPU laptop with 6 GB of ram with no problems. My render time with out GPU would be about the length of the video. For MP4 720P.

I've used my widdle DM1 2-core with PD 9 and 10, and even tested 11 on it. Sure, it's got it's limits, but using HQ photos, and 720 video, I can output short HD projects (less than 5-6 minutes), in any sort of format, I just gotta be patient sometimes. Adrian,

Informative results!

What did I note from your post?

Dual core 1.6GHZ intel T2050
2Gb RAM
6.5 Gb free space
128Mb total display video

And Editing HD Source video?

Power Director CAN and WILL open with specs this low. Editing a project CAN be accomplished.

2 gigs of RAM, 6 gigs of free disc space, 128 MB video card and a dual core CPU? It's nice to see proof that editing and opening of PD is possible and confirmed. At least on your laptop.

Hi Adrian

Wow I'm amazed that your laptop could produce at all.

So much for 100 GB of free hard drive theory

Happy editing Happing editing

Yeah, it was an interesting little experiment. I only did it to see if/how it would work.

Now, no one in their right mind would try and use such a system for complex or ongoing editing, but as Kevin said, it does show that PD11 can and will load, run and produce on a minimal spec machine which I found interesting, especially as there has been a few posts where folk have been disappointed that it wouldn't load, and that therefore one can only point out that their system is below or just at the recommended specs and they should maybe invest in something new.

Good advice anyway probably, but PD should at least load and run!

Cheers
Adrian

Thanks Dave, but it really was just dumping clips together for the purpose.

This one is a bit more edited if you're interested:

Nearly all edited in PD - 9 I think? with a custom composed audio.

Cheers
Adrian

Yes I'tried with that and others but the old laptop seems to choke a bit on 1080p60 stuff - not surprising really.

Adrian my friend,

In the spirit of adding helpful information and also trying to "one up" you in a friendly spirited way. I too found myself a little bit bored after my xmas vacation and your test inspired me to try to confirm yours. I went out to my "shed" and got my old Compaq Pressario 2100 laptop which has been sitting in a 20 degree icebox to see if I could duplicate your test to some degree and provide some confirmation results of whether or not PD11 would at least open and edit a HD project.

I installed Power Director 11 Ultimate onto my frigid laptop which has the following highlighted specs, I hadn't even turned on this laptop in years:

Compaq DxDiag is Attached:

Windows Operating System: Windows XP Home Edition(5.1, Build 2600)
CPU: Mobile Intel Celeron Duo Core 1.80 GHz
RAM: 446MB
Graphic Card: Radeon IGP 340M
Graphic Dedicated Memory: 64.0 MB
Audio Driver Date: 2/17/2004
Video Driver Version 6.14.0010.6436
Video Driver Date: 5/15/2004
Hard Drive Capacity: 28.6 Gig
Hard Drive Free Space: 13.7 Gig
Page File Size: 800MB

I packed a project on my PC and transferred it to my Laptop desktop. The specs of the imported video and graphic images were:

Video Specs: 1920x1080 AVC, 14.25 Mbps Bitrate, 29.97 fps
Graphic Specs: 4608X2592 jpg

1. Power Director 11 Ultimate opened just fine.
2. PD11 imported the packed project successfully.
3. Playback was VERY sketchy even with Preview quality set to the lowest setting.
4. I produced to a 1920x1080 m2ts file successfully.

There you have it!

I was pretty surprised!

CONCLUSION: I now remember why this laptop was out in the shed!!

EDIT: Also, as expected, I got the prerendering problem of the timeline until I applied the latest patch. Once the patch was installed the prerendering issue ceased.

EDIT 2: I would NEVER consider using a laptop with these specifications to edit HD video. It was virtually impossible to edit with any amount of sanity, of which I have little left. But now I am slightly less bored after my xmas vacation. Thanks to you Adrian!!

Well, both of us can relax now that we have effective backup editing systems in place (or in the shed)
