Error making movie

When I use my Pentax K-30 camera with PD10, registered, latest build 2231, I am not able to produce any clips.

Even the most basic 4 second clip attached, and inserted into a new track on a new project, fails to produce in PowerDirector with an "Error making movie" pop-up. It doesn't matter what format I try to produce.

Every other function seems to work fine with this clip other than Produce, but that makes the application quite useless.

I don't see the problem with PowerDirector 9 or PowerDirector 11 trial. I believe something is broken in PD10 .

More:

1) I used a different video editor and I had no issue producing it to a HD mpg2 file.
2) I used a free video converter to make a mpg2 file. I then put it into PD10 and was able to produce it from there in any format I wished.

I would do "2" for now. There are many free video converters on the market. Check cnet downloads for a good one. .

Hi,
I had no problems with the file. Try downloading K-lite codec pack it comes in two scenerios 64Bit and 32 Bit that is the codec pack I have...also update Quicktime.

Just FYI, I do have the latest version of Quicktime. So perhaps that can be skipped.

I won't comment on the codec package.

When you said you had no problems, did you mean playing it or producing it? I could play it but not produce it.

Hi,
I produced to a 1920X1080 Mpeg-2 production, and then it played on Kwik player. I tried attaching the Production but the forum just sat there with no response.

Just to add to the thickening plot.

I have QuickTime Version 7.7.3
No codec packs installed.

PD10-Same symptom as Julien Pierre. Unable to Produce a video file.

PD11- Able to produce a video file.

Interesting ? Since the original was 720 , I used that profile to produce the file. That failed. I saw that you has used 1080. When I tried that, it worked !

I repeated the 720 and that failed again. I turned off the shadow files because I thought that was the problem but it was not.
In summary 1080 worked and 720 did not.

I used both PD 10 and PD 11. (and the other video editor).

Hi,
I will try with the 720 profile then. I will just confirm or not the file...takes to long to upload the finished if I succeed.
JIm
p.s. I tried in both pd10 Ultra and PD11 ultimate

Right, but the conversion is a lossy process, and a very lengthy one as well. This is not an acceptable workaround.
I guess I will need to file a bug with Cyberlink.

What software and settings did you use to produce successfully ?

Strange. The K-30 is supposed to be 1920x1080 . I guess I must have set it to 1280x720 by mistake. I will check the settings and take another video.

I saw that you has used 1080. When I tried that, it worked !

What was the exact combination of settings that worked for you when you produced ?
Was it with PD10 ? Which CODEC ? progressive or interlaced ? And what bitrate ?

FYI, I had tried originally to produce at H.264 1920x1080 24 mbps, I had not even realized the clip was 720 .
But I tried a few other CODEC/settings and none worked so far with PD10.

Thanks, at least I'm not alone . Hopefully Cyberlink will be able to reproduce it.

I can't check my Quicktime version at the time but it's fairly recent, though probably not the latest.

Do you mind reporting the build of PD10 you are using, and exactly what encoding settings worked ?
Target codec, resolution, interlaced or progressive, bit rate.

WORKS IN PD11 uLTIMATE USING 720 PROFILE..
Jim

I don't have any problem producing this clip with the PD11 trial so this is not surprising. But my trial is going to expire soon. The 25% performance regression in PD11 will keep me from upgrading for the time being.

Julien Pierre.

A slight correction on my part using PD10. I was curious if this works on your system.

I was able to Produce using the MPEG-4 file type using all the default Profile settings. If you select the "+" key you can also create some custom profile that might be more to you liking. By changing the video settings you could achieve a variety of quality settings that you may be happy with. If it works for you that is.

Had you tried that file type? This might be a more flexible work a round until more information is available.

Thanks, Kevin.
I don't recall if I tried MPEG-4 or not. I will try it when I get home tonight.

Hi Julien,
I just used the hDV mepeg-2 profile, 720P (progressive I guess). the pD10 build is 2231.

Just tried it, and sadly, it does not work for me. Same build of pd10, same "error making movie" error about 2 seconds after hitting produce.

Perhaps there are other program settings that come into play.

Looks like MPEG-4 works for this clip.
It appears that from a video perspective, all the parameters are the same. The video CODEC is the same.

The difference is mainly in the audio options. H.264 can do lossless and DD with multichannel.
MPEG-4 is AAC stereo only. That should be OK. Thanks, Kevin !

Unfortunately, WMV production still does not work, and this means the built-in publish function for Facebook & Youtube will not work ...
