Hello there, im not sure if im expecting too much from PD9 as Sony HD platinum does'nt seem to run much better than PD9 on my system.

I have the 2930 update but TBH it hasnt really improved my system! or made it worse as i have been reading.

Things like lagging whille shuffling the time line cursor is very slow and particle designs are terribly slow ie using the preset '02_light' drags my system down with only 25% cpu use in the preview window.

All drivers and patches are applied so i wonder if anyone would like to browse my DXdiag file and see if im missing something obvious or i am indeed expecting too much from a consumer editor ?

Thanks in advance

Small edit it will run 5 PIP's quite nicely once it catches up.

Your CPU and video are better than normal for a new computer that we have seen lately.

However..... l the only thing I see is your C drive space is non existent... as in almost none. (60 gig drive) I am assuming it is a digital drive. There have been a lot of new computers out with those tiny drives and after getting rid of it and replacing it with a good old fashion 300 - 600 gig drive performance was better. Been some new user's here that replaced their 40 - 60 gig digital drive with a standard SATA drive and they then could use PD9. Like you they could not do any editing without major problems/crashing until then.

Rendering videos you will end up with files up to and well over 100 gig. The largest I ever made was 208 GIG. I about fell out of my chair when I saw how large it was. (a video over 2 hours long) Not to mention all the page caching that windows/PD has do do in the background. NOTHING takes up or needs more resources than video editing.

Until they make a 600 gig digital drive that is affordable I can't see any reason to get one as I do not see the speed benefits -vs- size and cost yet.

What preview resolution you using, do not use HD preview, lower it is all I can think of to help you at the moment. I preview at the normal setting. (mostly because I have always used the normal setting for years)

Thank you for reply, you are indeed correct about the drive so i have transferred all data to a standard 500GB HDD and that has yeilded good results. Also have set the preview to 'normal' and that has made an even bigger difference! although it is nice to preview at HD level however i can see how much this is dragging the system down.

One other thing coming from a music production background i was expecting to be able to have say 10 HD clips running side by side and carfeull use of opacity showing through different layes of video, i can see this is not really the nature of video editing as it is for lots of lanes of music information, realising that has helped considerably.

After more research i have found that in-compressable data (HD video) is unsuitable for SSD drives as the drive it self will attempt data compression on a already compressed file and so not gain anything at all.

Thanks for the help it's jogged me into the right place.

Regards
Tony.

zenithdave...

Thanks for your reply, we all know that people do not like to hear that their new latest and greatest device, although a good item, does not work well under certain circumstances. You are not the only one lately to switch out the SDD drive for a standard drive to help improve using Power Director. While that same SDD drive makes a killer gaming drive, not so much for other things. I read a good article a month or so ago that talked about several problems, including how easy it is for them to get confused and overloaded that actually makes them slower than a standard drive. Wish I had kept the link.

The lagging preview thing is common, and you may notice sometimes its worse than at other times. I think it depends on how your computer sorted things on start up, what happens to be running in the background at the time, something that you just ran and stopped or it automatically ran and stopped and did not release resources like it should have, what you are trying to edit, and luck.... (mostly luck)

You will find that after you get used to whats going on, the HD preview is not that important anyway. The reason it gets laggy is because it renders your project "on the fly" when you preview it. It seems to stop for a fraction of a second to get those pesky transition and titles kicked in and moving. Wen you know everything is set the way you want it, in normal or low preview you can make sure your synced stuff is the way you want it. You already know you pictures/videos look good.
