DVD Summary Accuracy - Refuse To Burn Workaround

Hi all,

This has been commented on before, how PD prevents you burning a project if it feels it's too big to fit on a DVD.

I've recently completed a blu-ray project that I wanted to downscale to an 8.5gb DVD for my brother, who doesn't own a blu-ray player.

The project was 2 hours 6 minutes long and PD estimated that it would not fit onto the 8.5gb DVD with an estimate of 8548MB (see screenshot) and hence, when I tried to burn to folders or burn to disc, the 'refuse to burn' message popped up and I could not go any further.

At this point I was frustrated because I knew that a project of this length at a bitrate of 8mbps (the HQ setting) should fit on the disc no problem.

HOWEVER...

When I ticked the 'Burn to disc' and 'Create a folder' together and clicked 'Burn' a different message appeared, warning me that it might not fit on the disc but did I want to proceed anyway. I clicked to proceed.

The project burnt to folders first and then burnt to the disc. The project fitted on the disc at 7919MB and so I have my DVD in HQ without having to use 'Smartfit'.

The obvious question here is, why not replace the 'refuse to burn' message with the 'warning' message you get when burning to folders and disc simultaneously?

Cheers,

Andrew

Hi Andrew

I'm not sure why it does this - I discovered it a while ago when I realised there wasn't a 'smart' fit option for burning BD's.

I had a 26GB project to go onto a 24.?GB BD. So, after using the workaround to get a 'burn to folder' I accidentally ticked both boxes and hey presto a message saying something like:

"PD has detected the size of disc is 24 GB and the project is 26GB are you sure you want to continue".

I pressed OK and it burnt and played perfectly with no loss of quality.

I reported this to Dafydd and he said it was something to do with the bitrate information not being exact.

I know it's not of much help - but others are aware of it.

Hi Neil,

In that position, when burning to folders, it's easier just to tell PD you're burning to a 50gb blu-ray I've found.

I had a project that PD felt was too big for a 50gb disc in PD8, but there was no 'refuse to burn' message as there is for DVD and AVCHD DVD so I was able to proceed.

In PD9, you have the option for burning to bigger blu-rays than 50gb! I'd hate to think how much they are to buy!

Cheers,

Andrew
