SVRT - Splitting Clips

Hi folks,

I recently completed a 37 minute project using 2 Canon cameras. Both cameras recorded for an hour, with both cameras producing four 15 minute clips each.

Using 'split' then deleting unwanted clip fragments (my preferred method to 'trim'), I edited the eight clips into a total of 36 clips and placed them on the timeline in the correct chronological order. Running an SVRT check for h.264, 1920x1080 (24mbps), PAL showed no re-encoding needed (see attached).

When producing, SVRT passed through the first two clips no problems and then re-encoded the remaining 34.

Slightly surprised, I noted that all of the remaining clips were truncated parts of the original 8, and did not start from their original start points.

So I ran a test.

1. Take 4 different clips, about 1 minute each, and place them on the timeline;
2. On each clip, split it 10 seconds before the end and delete the final 10 seconds from the timeline;
3. Run an SVRT check - no re-ncoding needed.
4. Produce - in my case h.264, 1920x1080 (24mbps), 25fps

SVRT runs as expected.

Now do the test again with the original 4 clips, but this time delete the first 10 seconds off each clip. In my case, SVRT fails to work correctly and all 4 clips are re-encoded, even though the SVRT check indicates no rendering needed.

Have a try folks!

Cheers,

Andy

Hi Andrew,

I've just quit using SVRT.
All sorts of different outcome in my experience.
Just something.

So this concludes that SVRT works fine until the encoder reaches a point where there is a modification in the timeline and then fails to resume working?

edit. Nevermind. I reread your post and realized the problem is more than that being that when all 4 clips were cut at the end of them, SVRT worked okay.

Hi Andrew

Welcome back

Slightly surprised, I noted that all of the remaining clips were truncated parts of the original 8, and did not start from their original start points.

Did this occur when you turned the SVRT off?

I used four Sony TG5E H.264 AVC 1920x1080 AVCHD clips as well total length 1 minute with no transitions or effects.

I produced using H.264 AVCHD 1920 x 1080 with SVRT ON and it took 9 seconds first time and 12 seconds the next time

I then produced using the same profile with SVRT OFF and it took 3mins 12secs!

I then split a clip and deleted about ten secs and produced H.264 AVCHD 1920 x 1080 with SVRT ON and it took 15 seconds.

I then produced using the same profile with SVRT OFF and it took 2mins 43 secs.

I then produced in MPEG2 BD1920x1080 with SVRT ON and it took 52 secs.

Then with SVRT OFF and it took 54 secs.

I only ask this because I found by turning this SVRT function off it actually rendered my projects (in some cases) smoother and in most cases faster use the BD1920x1080 profile.

With SVRT turned on I was getting haziness around the edges and in some cases the audio was out of sync by a second or or so in some parts.

I recently edited/produced/burnt to blu-ray approx 40GB of data shot a Sony TG5E H.264 AVC 1920x1080 AVCHD (I did produce it in BD1920x1080 profile as the H.264AVC AVCHD 1920x1080 profile struggled with transitions, various music overlays and of MPEG2 files). The obvious downside was it took marginally loner to produce (sometimes) and the file size was rather laaarge :

Happing editing

Neil

Hi,

Thanks Neil - interesting data, although I'm one of those editors who depends on SVRT working properly due to the rather large size of my projects. My latest blu-ray was of Christmas with my family, consisted of four PD projects on 1 blu-ray disc, shot in 1920x1080 24mbps 25p, and was 3 hours long! It burnt to blu-ray folders in 1 hour 30 minutes, with SVRT functioning correctly for the majority of the authoring process - although not in the case of the project I described above! Imagine how much longer it would have been if the entire project had been re-encoded!

Other editors may not have SVRT compatible cameras or may include so many enhancements to their work that SVRT is not viable.

One of the other beta testers used the phrase 'SVRT has to work' which I totally agree with. Not only for maintaining picture quality but also for the massively reduced stress your system goes under. My CPU is at about 15% when SVRT is working, and at up to 98% when re-encoding if GPU acceleration is turned off. Less stress often means less crashes and a happier user.

I always make it my business to go over SVRT thoroughly because of this.

Thanks also to Kevin for successfully reproducing my test above with his Sony camera! Dafydd has the report!

Cheers,

Andrew

My pleasure Andrew! Although I didn't want to see it render!

Hi all,

Preliminary tests with the new build 2702 indicate that the SVRT splitting bug appears to have been fixed with the 'allow SVRT...' option ticked in 'Edit' -> 'Preferences' -> 'Produce'.

Any other feedback?

Cheers,

Andrew

I agree that it works as long as you remember to make the change in preferences. Personally I think that should be the default setting. Does anyone actually have problems with that box checked? Q9300 2.5 GHz

I couldn't agree more James. Sony and Canons both have to have the option ticked. Not sure about Panasonics.

Maybe worth recommending Dafydd?
