Although,

Is the external hard drive connected via USB 3.0, which your PC is equipped with?

This would be a much faster connection than USB 2.0 like mine.

So then this may not be the problem. Son of a gun...he shouldn't be having this problem.

Just covering my bases.

Thanks Dafydd for the feedback. I wasn't sure which codec pack to install.

Ok. Just tried to edit about 1 min. project. I transfered those files to my internal drive.
Imported into editor and timeline. Added 1 transition effect..Dominos Right. Opened my coretemp utility and monitored cpu usage.

Right at the transition point..same thing. The preview stops and audio continues. I pause the preview. The program freezes for about 5 seconds. It starts again where it left off in the audio segment where I paused it.

I did this with coretemp open and closed. Same issue. My cpu usage at the transition point goes down to about zero!! While the clips are playing before the transition point it is around 4-1o%

I have a 1Gig internal drive that I will be using for projects.

Keep in mind, that Power Director does not import the ACTUAL video clip into your project. The pds file the PD8 creates is simply a pointer to WHERE your video clips are located. So the file size of the pds file is very small. So some words of advice...don't move your video clips once you give them a home. If you do, you will then open a PD8 project and will have to "browse for them again, because PD8 doesn't know where you have moved them to. You will only have to do this once and then resave your project with the new location information now written to the pds file.

So you can dedicate, like myself, your 1TB internal drive to house your video clips. I then use my USB frive as a duplicate backup of that drive.

That's all the time I have for now...will download the codec pack when I get a chance and try editing again.

Dafydd- My windows recorder will not save to jpeg or the other format. I tried to unzip it and it only gave me the option i attached. I will look into downloading one that you suggested and repost screenshots.

Thanks for all the help...was not expecting to have issues with this program..but should have known better. I have tried every nle out there except the real spendy ones like CS5 and Edius 6. Although the Neo 2.5 trial has had no issues that I could detect.....yet!!!

I think I will try to capture new footage from my Handycam to my internal drive and try editing that with the same transitions/effects. See if I notice same issue.

Talk to you all later!! and big TY to you both!! Are we there yet?

One other pointer:

You probably installed the Sony PMB software to playback and import your video files. It can be very useful. You can drag video clips from this application into Power Director, which I do all the time. It is helpful because you might have grouped your clips in a special way and then can easily select all thes and drag them into PD8.

Just thought I would pass this along.

The most recent version of this is

PMB Version 5.3.01.09273 it has some new features that may not be on your original version that came with your camera.

This sounds very similar to the problem I and others were having some months ago - freezing at transitions. My solution was to stop filming in full HD (60fps) and go down a notch to 30fps. Everything worked perfectly then.
PD8 could not handle 60 fps from my Sanyo Xacti FH-1.

I totally agree with you....60fps second is a real challenge! But what is very perplexing is that his camera shoots at 30fps. He has basically the exact camera I do with the exception of hard drive size in the camera. I think that is the only difference that I am aware of, and I don't have a bit of trouble using the Sony's footage.

Thanks for the added input though....every bit helps!

Regards,

Kevin

Just tried some solutions from customer support last few days. Still no good. I have virus prog. disabled and all other apps.
I just imported files to my internal hard drive from my Sony HDR SR11 Handycam. My thought was that perhaps my external drive files might have been corrupted in some way. Alas!! Same issue. In fact..I only used 4 clips and 1 transition!! The Chain Reaction Right transition and it freezes preview and stops Powerdirector in it's tracks!! Sometime it automatically shrinks the program to my taskbar below.

What is going on here?? I hate to sound negative and I always give the benefit of doubt to user error or ignorance but I am feeling like the Powerdirector 8 is not doing what it advertised it will!! Has anyone tried version 9? I just purchased 8 3 weeks ago...I wonder if they will refund my money and/or let me upgrade to 9 for free to see if that fixes the bugs I am experiencing.

Arghh..frustrated! Are we there yet?

I also downloaded FFdshow codec. Anything else I can try anyone???
I just don't see why I should have to resort to using Neoscene to be able to edit my footage since Powerdirector claims I should be able to do it natively. Are we there yet?

Just upgraded to PD9. SO far the editing is much better. Transitions do not cause jitters or freeze the system if preview is set to High. When switched to Full HD or HD it is a little laggy. I added several clips and title, color effect, and few transitions. Much improved performance over PD8. I will be testing project in produce and burn to disc/dvd in avchd. Will post results. : Are we there yet?
