PowerDirector 8 - Fraps NTSC/Pal conversion issues

Recently installed windows 7 on my system and now i get constantly bugged by PD 8 that my clips recorded in FRAPS are NTSC clips and that they will have to be converted to PAL. Naturally the conversion is so awesomely bad that the resulting clips are almost useless.
I tried to set NTSC in the configuration tab (alt+c) but PD converts them never the less (wtf?).

So ultimately i have no idea what the hell the software is doing, converting stuff vice versa on both pal and ntsc settings, ruining my footages. I would like to know if there is a way to either disable the ntsc/pal conversion or have a work around this "bug".
Beyond not being able to gasp why PD has to wreck the clips under all settings let me please ask with all due of respect why such an option is automated on a software that produces movies from which barely 10% reach a TV screen, since everything goes on youtube, facebook and what not.

wtf is not acceptable terminology for this forum, do not repeat.

If your problem is to do with:
1. the popup warning you of mixing frame rates then look in Edit > Preferences and uncheck the option.
2. If you've selected the incorrect frame rate for the frame size in FRAPS then that's your problem and not PowerDirector's.

If FRAPS records to an mpeg which is not consistent with either PAL or NTSC and does not comply with standard norms then that is to do with your selection.

I recall this issue has been raised previously a good while back (use Search) and the fault was to do with the selections made during the capture process by the operator. The problem at that time was the editor recorded to a PAL frame size with an NTSC frame rate... a real duh moment.

You haven't provided a sample file (an attachment here) or stated the frame selection size you've made or the file type you have - all useful bits of detail missed off your post.

I'm only guessing.

I have read the specific topic before posting.
I opened this topic because i use the default settings on both FRAPS and PD 8 which worked flawlessly till i installed windows 7.
Fraps records at 30FPS full screen just like before and PD 8 is on the 25 FPS PAL. Furthermore: Switching back and forth these settings has absolutely NO effect on the outcome. Clips WILL get reduced in quality either way the only difference is that under PAL i get a warning window about my "preferred TV format setting" being PAL and that im about to add NTSC clips.

Either ways, (i underline one more time) the clips get a dramatical quality loss the moment i drag them onto the Master video track.

On this note please give it a thought that not everybody is a movie or TV engineer like your self. It might be a "duh moment" for you but others are still at learning about it.
After searching some more on the forums i still cant see the actual idea behind having such an aggressive yet useless feature in PD 8. Computers are not affected by the PAL/NTSC TV restrictions so ultimately this means that the software is screwing up the clips on a totally causeless note.

Regardless. Thank you for your reply.

Re: "movie or TV engineer", I'm neither.

You failed to provide specific information related to your issue? Try and answer the basic information request.

Looks to me you're referring to the preview quality settings in PD and not the finished rendered resolution. Up your preview display options (you may need to improve your gpu).

1. Update to the latest PD8, you're running a very early build which had a few issues: http://www.cyberlink.com/downloads/support/powerdirector/patches_en_GB.html

2. As an attachment: http://forum.cyberlink.com/forum/posts/reply/0/13872.page
Still looks like a Preview issue to me where you need to up the selection.

3. What is a "standard AVI"? Screenshot has been asked for, for a reason - it tells us more than what you think.

What codec is being used in the avi? Please do a google search on the term "standard avi" (just to save me writing it up) and you'll see an AVI is just a carrier for a wide variety of codecs.

I think it would be useful to provide a sample file, however as the (specialist capture) codec is likely to be an issue for the rest of us.... we cant assist you.

Either ways, (i underline one more time) the clips get a dramatical quality loss the moment i drag them onto the Master video track.

Once you place a video clip on the timeline, the PREVIEW SCREEN will now show a reduced level of quality to preserve your CPU resources which are very important during "Real Time" video editing. So the quality is lowered and will "appear" that the final quality will be reduced, this is not the case. The preview window has three quality settings that you can change that affect the quality that you see on the screen...LOW, Normal(default) and High.

To change the setting...place a clip on the timeline....select the button below the preview window...white square surrounded by a white border...select HIGH. Be advised...the preview quality will improve, but your editing experience may degrade because....depending on the level of your PC....CPU resources will be diverted to giving you a better preview, but now the "Real Time" processing of everything you have placed on the timelines will suffer because your PC may not keep up. But then again you may be just fine...it all depends on the level of your PC and the type and size of your video clips and the total size and complexity of your video project that you are importing into Power director.

The whole question about PAL vs NTSC and whether or not PD wants to convert it can be answered if you provide a sample clip as an attachment like Dafydd suggested. An avi file can be created or captured in a variety of different screen resolutions with many different sound and audio codecs associated with it. So the sample file will answer your question with a definitive answer....more than likely

I have the same problem.

My Toshiba Camileo x100 makes Full HD pal format at 30 frames.
PD8 is messing with my video and making it 25 frames and visibly lower quality then the original.
If I make the movie in NTSC format it is eve worse. (Since I am in Europe)

Is there any way to reslove this ?

dragan,
1. Start your own new topic.
2. Pal = 25fps and not 30
3. Toshiba camileo is capturing at 30 fps = NTSC
4. Likely you have set the "TV" option to PAL and nothing else in Camileo
5. I have a camileo (piece of junk for audio) and it captures in NTSC and I'm happy to edit in NTSC and output. DVD recorders don't care about regions only for commercial stuff.
6. No PD8 doesn't mess up the video.
7. Post as a NEW topic.

I will remove any further posts on this thread by you as you are off topic.

Thanks

Dafydd
