Hi members,
I would like to know if any editor has experienced a PD9 screen interface "drop out" to grey? The situation is recoverable by moving the cursor over the interface and each image which makes up the interface and the project then re-appear. The situation can occur when a large project is saved - a time your system gets stressed BUT it only happens to PD.

I have a two monitor set up and PD9 in the left monitor greyed out - the right monitor remained active and the PC functioned without a problem.

Please advise if you have experienced this type of event and if you can recall what actions you were undertaking at the time.

many thanks

PS This event happens to both Nvidia and ATI GPU's

Of course this has happened to me! Quite a few times, I just thought I overtaxed my computer.
If I recall correctly, and I rarely do, I was probably trying to do too many things at once, just not sure what they were, but it does happen on both machines. Probably a scenario where I was editing, had the internet open, maybe photo program, too. No details, but when it happens again... HP Envy Phoenix/4thGen i7-4770(4@3.4GHz~turbo>3.9)
Nvidia GTX 960(4GB)/16GB DDR3/
Canon Vixia HV30/HF-M40/HF-M41/HF-G20/Olympus E-PL5.

Quote: 3. Please make sure you have applied the patches/updates in order - ALL of them. I'm of the opinion the patches repair specific parts. 2316 had problems and needs these patches.

Quote: 6-4. ALWAYS save pds/project files to a new name NEVER overwrite a named file OR use the "SAVE" option.
6-4-1. Saving in numerical order project001.pds etc ensures you retain a copy of your last action and have a fall back.

All though the excerpts above are not directly related to this issue...Why do I still feel like I am Beta testing? I love Beta Testing so that isn't a problem....

Having said that....This "gray screen" video crash happens to me all the time (on an ongoing basis) in PD9 with other graphic programs open (like Photoshop CS5)! I thought this was a new feature in PD9...noo not really a "feature". I just close and restart the PD9 program...I adapted.

It is hard to tell exactly what is causing it without a true beta test process or QA.

For example...I just added my first SmartSound clip to a PD9 project...and IMMEDIATELY crashed PD9. Doesn't crash EVERYTIME I open the project...but consistently enough that I point at SmartSound..of course..I also used a TITLE..so who knows... Forum search shows SmartSound is still a problem. I speculate that if we knew the CURRENT "potholes" to watch out for in PD9, we could use it better.

Hi Fred,

thank you for your input.

I feel an update is in order to explain matters a little more.

The grey interface issue has only been reported, as far as I'm aware, on the forum once and I answered it, a good while ago to. I couldn't find the thread.

I "recently" raised the issue with CL (I tried to localise the cause on my system and suspected my own GPU, but...) who wanted to know what editors had had the problem. So to get me out of a "moaning mini" jam, I posted a "maybe you have to" post on the forum.

This isn't so much beta testing as getting information confirmed and editors working together and comparing notes...

I just felt I was moaning without ammunition.

Thanks so far - more input please.

Coincidence or what??

Sorry, in my excitement, forgot to switch the "track cursor" option on!

Do I get a new laptop prize or something for capturing the elusive bug??

Cheers

Dafydd: This "greying out" happens to me randomly as well. "I say randomly" because I haven't been able to find any consistent cause. I am usually editing two-hour SD videos.

I have found that sometimes clicking on the PD menu icon at the very top left of the screen a time or two pulls it back. It does not seem to be a very consistent bug.

Have a great day.

Well, Bevan, seems you've opened a can of worms here!

Yeah, look how silent everyone has been . I bet each thought it was their computer.

PD8 - not for me it didn't. Sidestepped that one easily Go-on, throw another crab ball and see if I can hit it . I've played cricket, old boy and can whack 'em to the boundary!

What was PD8?

Actually, what was this thread about? Barry won't know what cricket is - I think it's a sort of sophisticated baseball with incomprehensible rules and protocols.

Incomplete grey screens in PD9? YES! Randomly. Same symptoms as others have described... except - Fred - mine does it when NOTHING else is happening.

Corrected by a quick jiggle? YES!

Thought it was just my PC? YES, at first, but I seem to recall someone else mentioning it. Did a search for "disappear" and this was the only reference I could find http://forum.cyberlink.com/forum/posts/list/15892.page#77982

Happen in PD8? NEVER!

I'm not a jiggler, I prefer to Watusi to skiffle music, the collision of cultures just freaks out the band.

Nina, ALL builds of 9, to my recollection.

Well, I was just trying to be kind...so MUCH bad can be said about this product, I hesitate to start, for fear that I will not be able to STOP!!!

It makes my lowly VCR tapes and Family videos (yes, HD) and loads to YouTube, and has "reasonably" straightforward (with PDSPEED and a few cutom profiles added) editing functions, so I try to keep the new kids interested, and informed.

I have, over the years amassed MANY programs and MANY versions of each (I get long in the tooth they tell me), and NONE of them have ever been FIXED..just updated to a new set of "features and enhancements" (can be read as buggy actions).

Talk about pain...I am still chasing the location of network setups, through all the versions of WINDOWS...do they REALLY need to move that stuff in every version!!!!??

So yes...it (the graying out) probably happens all the time, regardless of what is or has been run, but I just adapt and have developed a method of backing up my work that prevents me from "melting down", too much.

What does char my wick, is the large group of individuals, that try and run heavy resource hitting products on OLD technology...then complain that the program is CRAP (present company excepted)!. Look, just because your old machine ran the old program fine..and you can't seem to understand how video card resources are related to video production and DVD Burning, doesn't mean that the program is BAD! Get a new machine to leverage new technology (and yes...new drivers WILL be required!!) and quit complaining when the program causes your Model"T" to hiccup!! I am sad that I had to retire my IOMEGA Buz, but life moves on!!

I did say this was not pointed at the Seniors here, didn't I?? So...no flames!!! We have scars, but they are like the tattoos that define and bind us!!! Yes, my program has "issues" all the time. But I have tried the others and I like where I am, thanks!!

If they just paid the one guy at CYBERLINK that still works on the code a little more...maybe he would work harder!!!
