Video Reverse Working? (No, its not)

I haven't used it before but recently I've tried using reverse video in a number of different simple 720P productions. It seems to not work, and locks up the software. It doesn't crash, but doesn't respond, either.

If you try to produce it, it gets stuck right at the point where the reverse video would start.

Take Simple MP4 source clip, split in 4 parts. Copy any of the parts and paste it as a fifth part. Apply reverse to it. That's it. It hangs the editing preview window, too.

Has any one gotten it to work?

HERE'S THE VIDEO SHOWING THE PROBLEM:

Using Windows XP Pro

Imported MP4 clip into timeline,
Split into 4 parts
Applied reverse to all 4 parts
Clicked play
All 4 parts played in reverse correctly

Then copied and pasted one part to end
Clicked play
Part 1 played correctly
Parts 2,3,4, & 5 played as a still image

Computer slowed down, massive memory usage, which was still evident after closing PD, had to reboot

Exactly. That's what happened last time I tried it a few days ago. Single image is stuck. It won't render, either. Win8 64-bit Pro Retail

Carried out same tests, using MiniDV, played in reverse correctly no matter how many times I copies and pasted.

Issue therefore appears to be confined to MP4

Hi OTW,

Following your suggested test to the letter, I did a few experiments. Here, for what they're worth, are the results.

Test #1
- Placed 720p (01:29) WMV sample clip in timeline. Clip aquired online
(http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/musicandvideo/hdvideo/contentshowcase.aspx )
- Followed OTW instructions > copied second split to end of video
- Applied Reverse Video effect
Preview playback stuttered a little when the reversed snippet was reached, but then played on normally.
- Produced to WMV9 HD Standard Quality.
Playback in WMP and VLC players was flawless.

Test #2
- Placed 1920x1080 AVCHD H.264 MTS sample clip in timeline.
(Clip was acquired here on the forum from member)
- Followed OTW instructions > copied split to end of video
- Applied Reverse Video effect
Preview playback had major stutters and became almost a total freeze when the reversed snippet was reached.
- Produced to WMV9 HD Standard Quality. (tried others as well)
Production/ rendering appeared normal, with SVRT on or off. However, upon reaching the reversed section, I got a popup saying “out of memory”. (I had never seen that popup before)
Playback in WMP and VLC players? Unable to Produce, so no playback results.

Test #3
Same as #2. Only difference was that tested clip was PAL, and at a higher fps rate. But results were identical.
Conclusions
Working with the 720p clips, and having one play in reverse, did cause some stuttering in the preview set at High Resolution, though once Produced resulted in a flawless production and playback. Making the Reverse Video effect a completely viable option to use in my productions.
However, stepping up to full HD (1920x1080), the reverse effect would not work for me. But I attribute that more to me using a computer who’s specs are not up to the task of effortlessly dealing with full HD, and not necessarily the Reverse Video effect itself.

Hi Carsten,

I may not be interpreting your findings correctly, but you did apply reverse to all split parts, not just the cut and copied part, not quite clear in your write up

Hi Robert,

As I stated, I followed OTW's instructions to the letter.

OTW wrote:

Now my tests were not done with Mp4 clips (though I am confused about the discussion of all the versions of Mp4 by different manufaturors that I see here on the forum), so my results may be mute to OTW's question, if he was just intending us to test only 720p "Mp4" clips.
But I was a just bit bored this evening Robert, so inspired by OTW's post, I just thought I'd noodle around with the Reverse Video effect a little.

Hi Carsten,

Actually, it was me who read OTW,s post incorrectly, if I carry out the test but applying reverse only to the copy and pasted clip, then it plays without issue. The clip I used is MPEG-4 AVC/H.264, taken with a Sanyo HD 1010.

So my problems only occurred when applying reverse to all the clips.

Oops

I added a video of it happening linked in the original post.

I pasted the fifth part in the middle, and applied reverse only to that clip. So the reverse clip has normal clips before and after it.
