Place Video or Picture into a Revolving Cyclinder

Looking to find a way to put a video or picture into a cylindrical shape object and that has a circular rotation, just not an end over end effect but round and round effect as on a merry-go-round on a play ground or even like the movement of a carousel.

I do not know if in PD-10 a video can be placed into/onto a revolving cylinder and be shown as moving in a circular rotation.
There is a program for Mac users that will do this, the program is from Times For Fun company and name of program is FastCut RT. I am not promoting the Mac program, just wanting to know if that program can do it, how can it be done in PowerDirector as well???

I have been trying to do this in PD-10 without much success. Is there anyone else who has worked on such an idea in PD? I have attached a picture and a short 8 second video to show what I am wishing to try and accomplish in PowerDirector.

Just think it is a neat effect and any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Bill

Hi wh7262,

I haven’t ever really explored creating a rotating “Cylinder” (directly in PD), like the one you attached.
But I believe an animated GIF could be created. I know member ynotfish (Tony), did a rotating animated GIF Globe here...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GQvhfhN3IPs

However, I did come up with a rotating image “Cube” directly in PD10 a while back.
Perhaps this tutorial below, will suit your needs for now, until someone comes up with a do-able rotating image “Cylinder” workaround.

Thanks Cranston for the tip on making a spinning globe gif file, it is close to what I am trying to do.

While I was working in Gimp early this morning, 3:10AM , found these articles concerning revolving cylinder:

Gimp - Spinning Striped Pole
http://www.gimptalk.com/index.php?/topic/43857-gap-spinning-striped-pole/
and
http://www.gimpchat.com/viewtopic.php?p=29374#p29374
and
http://www.gimptalk.com/index.php?/topic/16-creating-a-3d-cylinder-in-gimp/

Looks as if one will need to make a gif file after all. Shucks, I was trying not to do that, but the outcome for now is there.

Thanks Again,
Bill Thanks,

Once a cylinder shape was designed and save in Gimp as a gif file, I then used FormatFactory to convert the gif file to a mpeg file. I do not know if Paint.net can do the same as Gimp right now.

Opened PD-10, imported the mpeg into PD-10
Placed mpeg on Timeline

What to do with a background that is not transparent, here are two options to correct the not so transparent area:
A. Using The Apply Chrome Key Option
1. With the video selected in the Timeline, click the 'Modify' - which will open up into 'PiP Designer'
2. Within the 'Pip Designer', click on the empty 'square' for the 'Apply chrome key'
3. Click on the 'eye dropper' - which will bring up the 'chroma key settings'
4. Move the 'eye dropper' to an area needing NOT TO BE TRANSPARENT[u] and click on that area.
5. Also might need to increase the'Tolerance of intensity' level in order to finely tune the 'NOT Transparent' area.
6. Now click 'Save' and video is ready to be produced.

B. Using the 'Add/Edit PiP Effect Mask'
1. Clicked 'Modify' - opens up into 'PiP Designer'
2. Within the Pip Designer, click on the 'Add/Edit PiP Effect Mask' button.
3. Scroll down the different mask effects and select the mask having a vertical black area, then a white area, and finally a black area, see attached file named 3 verticals.png.
4. Now click on this mask and it will be applied to the video, see the following png showing the before/after adjustments:
B4 Selecting 3-verticals mask.png
after applying 3 vertical mask.png

5. Might need to turn off the 'Maintain Mask Aspect Ratio' in order to adjust the mask to fit the video area needing to be 'NOT TRANSPARENT', see the after applying 3 vertical mask.png
6. Now click 'Save' and video is ready to be produced.

Hope this helps out.
