AVI sync

WMPlayer and Media Player Classic render an AVI that was captured from the Net in sync. Tested with several files.

When that clip is imported into PD 11 it begins in sync, but the audio quickly and progressively gets ahead of the video, whether played as a preview clip or from the timeline. Restart anywhere in the timeline and it's the same: audio quickly outpaces video.

PROPERTIES lists the file as an H.264AVC/281kbps at a frame rate of 30, with MP3 audio at 44kHz/128 bps

This is not happening in the Videopad (freeware) editor. How can this be avoided in PD 11? Thanks

PD 11 vers 2418

1. Which operating system: W8
2. Which version of PD: 2418 TRIAL
3. Which SR number (available in the "About" box of PD and is NOT the CD-Key!): N/A
4. What kind of video source material used (codec / container), extension? We often ask for a 5 to 10 second sample , please provide one as an attachment.

Excuse the large attachment and ignore its content. It's an AVI of a "talking head" that clearly loses sync when loaded into PD.
Load it into PD, then start playing at any point. It will soon lose sync. At least that's what happens here.

5. A detailed step by step description of the problem.

I have seen sync problems with a WMV as well - jitter, as PD is continually trying to maintain synchronization. The file here
was captured by NCH Debut. It plays in various media players and in the NCH Videopad editor without sync problems.
To verify this, D/L their trial editor from NCHsoftware.com.
While recording, Debut displays various frame rates, but none seems to stymie those programs - just PD 11.
Many, but certainly not all, similarly captured AVIs have problems in PD.

6. What anti-virus solution is installed on your PC?: MS Windows Defender

7. What codec packs installed? See PD's Readme html file: No packs, just W8 native codecs and those provided with Media Player Classic Home Cinema version 1.6.5.6366 (32-bit).

8. What other video editing programs are installed: None
9. What burning software is installed on your PC: NTI Media Maker (suite)
10. What type of blank disk was used, if you have a burning create issue? N/A
11. What background processes / programs running?: All other programs closed.

Hi borgus1,
Thank you for the data.

Please look at the avi capture file data for the audio:
Quote:
Audio
Format : MPEG Audio
Format version : Version 1
Format profile : Layer 3
Codec ID : 55
Codec ID/Hint : MP3
Duration : 1mn 10s
Bit rate mode : Constant
Bit rate : 128 Kbps
Channel(s) : 2 channels
Sampling rate : 44.1 KHz
Resolution : 16 bits
Stream size : 1.07 MiB (36%)

The problem lies in the mp3 within the avi file. Mp3's cause problems for editors, certainly with PDR. I carried out the following work-around and the talking head matched the lip sync.

1. open PDR
2. Place the avi in the Library Room
3. Right Click on file and select Extract Audio
4. Save extracted audio
5. Place Video file in track 1
6. Deselect/uncheck audio track 1
7. Place extracted audi (a WAV file) into Track 2 audio under the video clip in Track 1.
8. Play the clip and the audio sync should be ok.

You can if everything is OK.
9. Unlink the video and audio in track 1,
10. Delete the audio in Track 1
11. Activate track 1 audio
12. Place the Extracted wav audio into track 1

Try and see if the above works for you. You must take care when using mp3 files even when the format is included within a captured video file.

Dafydd

Fine Dafydd,

The extraction/convert-to-WAV methods that you outlined had no effect, but your comment about MP3 did. I switched the capture software from MP3 (raw), the default, to MP3 (layer 3) and PD was happy. Many other choices are available as well. Thanks for the feedback.

While you're here, two suggestions for the developers...
1. Under OPTIONS/CONFIRMATION, add a user choice that allows PD to open a new session with its window dimensions as they were in the prior session. Now, it always opens maximized, overriding the usual Windows options for a "normal" window.

2. Add a button to the timeline zoom control that snaps the entire production to the size of the edit window. This is convenient for quickly viewing all clips on the timeline.
