Neil, did you roduce with "fast rendering" switched on?

Michael, thank you for that test and posting the results. It seems V1703 may be fraught with bugs. Were you trying to produce H.264 and MPEG-2 with "fast rendering" switched on? ~Tom~

The only thing I used was the Intel Quick Sync. I'm going to test out my Desktop computer witch is a old i7 860 to night. I have not installed the 1703 update on it yet. It is still at build 1424c. Intel i7 5960X overclock to 4 Ghz 16 GB of ram.

Hi Kmot

It produced fine with SVRT on and off

Both on & off.

Because you have already Produced the sample file it is not a true indication of the problem you were initially having.

By posting a RAW clip it would replicate your first post

I just reverted back to build 1424c.

I have the exact same problems, even with this new 6 sec MP4.

I have discovered that with fast rendering turned on I can produce in MPEG-2. But not MPEG-4.

So I might have been blaming build 1703 without merit.

It's probably due to having a new PC with a new OS and a new graphics card. It is an AMD system, and even though Cyberlink promotes itself on AMD's website as being able to use hardware acceleration, it is not for all formats unfortunately. At least not on my AMD equipped system.

My old PC was on XP 32-bit with dual Nvidia graphics cars and it was smoldering fast producing MP4 with hardware acceleration enabled.

I suppose this is just the way it is going to have to be with my new system.

Thanks everyone, for your support. ~Tom~

Hi Kmot

Well after lots of testing I can conclude the following:

(Note: It made no difference with SVRT on/off hardware acc on/off)

1. The GoPro clip would not Produce using the MPEG4 profile - in the Produce mode it would 'hang'

Using Intelligent SVRT the Production would stop and hang at 21%

2. The GoPro clip would not Produce using the .H264, MPEG2 profiles

3. The GoPro clip would Produce using the .MOV and .WMV profiles

BUT

4. By inserting a colour board at the start of the project you can Produce to ALL formats including the MPEG4

5. I then used PowerDirector 8 on my other laptop and the GoPro clip Produced in all formats

My conclusion is that there might be a codec issue somewhere in PD10 or maybe my computer is missing something.

However, please note that this GoPro file Produced perfectly in PowerDirector 8

Wow!!! Thank you so much for the incredible investigation you did!

That is quite interesting about the color board insertion.

And, FWIW, I only upgraded to PD10 a few months ago. And I had PD8 before that and used to produce in all formats with my GoPro (MP4), my Panasonic camcorder (H.264 AVCHD), and my Casio (AVI).

You sir, are amazing! ~Tom~

Kmot, Neil,

I got some different results on my system using the downloaded file.

The only format I was not able to use was the .mp4 Best Quality when combind with Intelligent SVRT. The production would stop at 21% or 1:14 into the file.

The program did not stop responding completely but I was not able to return to the edit page after stopping the render with the cancel button. I could move around somewhat within the produce module, but had to stop the program with Program Manager to get full functionality back.

Other formats as shown in the attached screen shot produced quickly and without problems.

Hal

edited to add: I used H/W encoding or SVRT where available

Hi Hal, thanks for doing the test.

So, what does this mean? Is PD10 V1703, or any PD10, overly sensitive to different PC equipment configurations? ~Tom~

Kmot,

All computer software is very sensitive to differing computer environments. This is not unusual, but it is frustrating. It makes troubleshooting software problems a very imperfect science.

I am currently using PD10 v.1703 and PD9 v.3305. Some things work in one but not the other. I sometimes find that I have to do certain parts of projects in different versions.

One has to learn to find and then work within the limitations of the software on each individual platform.

There are so many things that can go wrong when one starts editing video, more so now with the variations in High Def files, and the addition of the 3D variations make it that much more stressful for systems to cope. Sometimes the very latest and fastest of the systems have the same problems as the lesser powered systems.

I am still using XP 32bit and find things relatively stable. Will I be switching to 64bit? Yes. I am missing out on some of the more advanced features and I have to work in smaller chunks to acheive my desired results.

As I was told many years ago, computers only understand two things, on/off (1 or 0). Put one of those figures in the wrong place and you will get some very undesired results. This is more apt to happen the more complicated the number crunching becomes. Video editing deals with more number crunching than almost all other consumer software on the market.

Using a GoPro sample clip provided by another editor, 1080p, I have been unable to replicate the error.

Hi Kmot,
Having tested your attached clip, production freezes at 21%.

1. please change your camera settings to 1080p and record 5 seconds and attach the file here.
2. Please alter back the settings to 1280 and record an additional 2 files and attach one of them here.

Rendering and cancelling the file does mess up PD. Task manager was used to exit and PDR had to be removed from Processes (it was still running).

I'm unable to share the sample files i have but would request a gopro user to provide a 1280p sample for kmot to test and compare.

I used a 1280p 50fps clip and that produced ok.

Sorry Neil,
1. I was slowly downloading the file initially and wrote the first "test" up.
2. I then used the attached file and found the 21% issue.
3. I then used a 50p file and it produced ok.

4. Leaving a gap (and a colorboard) between the start and end resulted in a stall.

A new file from another user would be good to have. 1280p 59.94fps.

Dafydd

Using Tom's GoPro clip, GOPR0001.MP4, in my PD10.0.0.1703, I produced to:

MPEG-4 High Quality (1280x720 @ 9MBps) with & without hardware acceleration
and
MPEG-4 Best Quality (1920x1080 @ 13MBps) with & without hardware acceleration

without any issues.

Inserting a colour board made no difference, except in the duration of the produced file.

Cheers - Tony

Just reading the latest posts now. I will make some video captures as Dafydd requested.

However, be it known that all formats of GoPro video should be able to be produced in PD10, regardless of 720, 1080, 30, 60, 120 FPS, etc. ~Tom~

The first clip I posted was 60FPS. When I shoot 720P I typically use 60FPS because I intend to do some slow motion editing.

This clip is 720P but 30FPS.

This clip is 1080P, 30FPS.

A comment about the GoPro camera:

It is hugely popular around the world. Even professional videographers, television, and movie productions use the camera. Yes I have seen that many use other software programs to edit. But surely Cyberlink would not want their software to be shunned by potential thousands of users because "it don't work with PowerDirector! "

Thanks again all for your help.
