On certain DVD's there is no sound during playback. If you display Information it shows Output: No Information whereas for other DVD's it will show something like PCM 6 channel or so. I played with this for a while and have determined that this may be due to a copy protection scheme on the DVD.

There is an easy fix to this though. All you have to do is play a regular DVD first that does not use this protection scheme such that you do get sound and the Output is defined. Thereafter, as long as you don't close PDVD then you can now play any DVD that didn't work previously. It appears then when PDVD cannot find the audio output format on the disc it defaults to whatever it used previously.

Maybe in the next update to PDVD11 they will fix this so that playing such a DVD will default to the currently defined sound card configuration (in my case 6 channel).

An example of such DVD's include:
Mad men
Fried Green Tomatos
Mr & Mrs Smith
3:10 to Yuma

Hi Michael,

Were you able to reproduce the problem? Is there anything you want me to try on this end?

Hi Craig,

so far not - can you please add the DXDIAG as attachement (the function to add attachments is unlocked now)
please also post as many info about your system setup:

Hi Michael,

As a commercial software developer I can probably be a lot more help if I knew how does PowerDVD determine the output. Using the information display it appears the software does correctly determine the audio stream. When the DVD switches content from 2 channel to 6 channel PDVD changes also. So the input side seems to be okay. But I noticed that on most DVD's the output is set to OUTPUT: NO INFORMATION and this does not change as the input changes. But if I restart the DVD without closing the PDVD then most times it sets output to something like OUTPUT: LPCM .... 6 channel .. which is correct. I also noticed that so far there has been no problem with Bluray movies, only DVD's.

So the problem might be related to some initial communication between PDVD and windows or the audio driver? How does PDVD software set the output? And more specifically, under what condition does it display "No Information"? Where does it get the output information? If I know this there may be some tests I can run here that might help us resolve this.

Hi Craig,

The issue you describe looks like that PowerDVD can not build up graph to the output device for some specific scenario.

I checked the ASUS website and it looks that there are some updated drivers available (not 100% sure if matching to your device) could you please check if updated drivers are available and maybe fix this issue?)

Do you have onboard sound on your MB? I would like to ask you to enable it and x-check if the issue also happens with the onboard audio.

thanks for your help

Hi Michael,

I checked the xonar driver level and it was current.

I then removed the xonar driver and enabled the motherboard sound card. Booted a couple of times to make sure the xonar was removed and new soundcard enabled. I then checked and still get Output: No Information. So the problem seems to be in the windows system and not the audio card.

I then removed the motherboard audio and reinstalled the xonar driver. booted a couple of times and again verified no information on output.

I tried a few more things using Night at the Museum as the DVD:

1. With PDVD11 I get Output: No Information. Which means no audio out of the speakers. But, if I first play an old DVD and it correctly outputs LPCM audio, then, without stopping the program, all DVD's now play okay.

2. With Windows Media Center I get 2 channel audio, in other words, nothing from the center speaker. But if I stop the program, then restart it and continue where I left off, I get 5.1 channel with sound from center speaker. It is as if what ever audio format the program starts with then it stays with that. For example, with Night at the Museum the DVD starts with a lead in screen which is 2 channel, so it stays in 2 channel. But if you jump into the movie after restarting the player it jumps immediately into 5.1. I also noticed that any movie with the menus and trailers removed work okay.

3. With TMT5 it appears to work perfectly. I see the output format changing from stereo to 5.1 at various points during the trailers and menus. But when the movie starts it is in 5.1. This is the only player that does it correctly.

4. If I install Shark007 codecs and disable Windows audio codec then Windows media center plays the audio correctly. This would seem to indicate the windows codec is at fault. Obviously Windows Media Center would use it, TMT5 appears not to use it, and PDVD11 would appear to use it also .. but not sure.

So the problem seems to be in the codecs. Can I use GraphEdit or GraphEditPlus to display the filter graph when PDVD11 is playing and when TMT5 is playing to see what the difference might be? I would use TMT5 except that it stutters on DVD and Bluray playback, whereas PDVD11 plays the movies perfectly. PDVD11 is the first player that seems to play DVD's and Bluray movies on my system without stutter.

Hi Michael,

Here is the latest DXDIAG file. Let me know if there are other tests I can run at this end.

Another piece of information, all Blu-ray movies play perfectly. OUTPUT: LPCM 48Khz/16 bit 6 channels. So the problem seems to be in the graph setup when playing DVD's. Maybe DVD's use Windows audio decoder while Blu-ray movies use Cyberlink decoder?

Hi Michael,

I have sort of solved the problem. In the PDVD11 Audio settings the first line shows:

(current system setting) (6 speaker)

This is what I have been using because if I change the configuration of my sound card then it automatically changed the audio settings here also. But going down the list of specific speaker configurations I found:

6 speaker

which I assume is 5.1. So I selected this one and tried it. At first it didn't have any effect, still got "No Information" when trying to play a DVD. But then when I exited the program and restarted it, suddenly all my DVD's were playing correctly. Well sort of, if I play two DVD's in a row then I get No Information on the second DVD, first one always plays correctly. Since most of the time I play a movie and then exit this is okay.

I remember trying this once before but I didn't restart the program. When it had no effect I set it back to the first line item, which I assume is the default. The key is to make the setting then restart PDVD11.

To make sure, I changed the speaker configuration back to the original default setting and sure enough I get "No Information" for the audio playback. So forcing it to 6 channel definitely helps.

Hope this new piece of information helps to determine what may be happening.

Hi Craig,

thanks for the info - I will check with my colleagues if we have your Audio device in our QA - it sounds quite specific to your environment.

Hi Michael,

This weekend I built up another desktop PC, but this time I used Windows 7 x32 (the one I have been using so far was x64). This PC has a different motherboard, a different cpu, different DVD ROM drive, and a different sound card. Once the system was up and running I installed PDVD11 on it and loaded the DVD: Con Air. And guess what .. Output: No Information. Same as the other PC. So the only software I installed on this clean install was Windows 7 and PDVD11.

I observed much the same results as the first PC so it still seems something related to Windows 7 either 32 bit or 64 bit. Is there any diagnostics I can run .. for example, is there a test program I can run that might log a list of diagnostics that I could send back. I think one valuable clue is that this only happens on DVD's and not Blu ray discs. I am guessing there is some sort of decoder difference when playing these two medias. If I could install here some sort of modified decoder that would log some diagnostics why it has No Information for the output, I'm sure we could solve this quickly.

@CraigNZ

Thanks for your advice !!

One apparently should change to the number of speakers and not keep the "Current System Settings"

Have posted a separate one on this, with a more selfexplanatory titel.
( No sound - checkout speaker environment)

But bottomline, it was you who came up with the solution!

Many thanks again.

Hi Michael,

I think I solved it. Up to this point I have been running the trial version of PDVD11. But given the audio problem which I have a work around for, I still decided that the flawless playing of videos was good enough for me to go ahead and upgrade to the full version. I did that and after the install I found that the audio problem was gone. It appears then that the problem is with the trial version and not the full version, which is why you were not able to reproduce it, I am guessing.

Anyway, the problem has gone away and it is good that the discussion has helped at least one other member. Thanks for the great support Michael, at this point it is all working perfectly.
