Past History:

PowerDirector 21 - 9/2022
PowerDirector 20 - 9/2021
PowerDirector 19 - 9/2020
PowerDirector 18 - 9/2019
PowerDirector 17 - 9/2018
PowerDirector 16 - 9/2017
PowerDirector 15 - 9/2016
PowerDirector 14 - 9/2015
PowerDirector 13 - 9/2014
PowerDirector 12 - 9/2013
PowerDirector 11 - 9/2012
PowerDirector 10 - 10/2011
PowerDirector 9 - 11/2010
PowerDirector 8 - 8/2009
PowerDirector 7 - 5/2008
PowerDirector 6 - 3/2007
PowerDirector 5 - 12/2005
PowerDirector 4 - 4/2005

And to be more specific for the recent releases, usually around the 15th (19 - 17th, 20 - 22nd, 21 - 15th). I'd wait and see what new offerings and what if any they offer for perpetual users.

It is usually somewhere between September and October. PD21 was released on Sept 15 last year so PD22 may be released next week if the trend continues. My notes indicate PD21 was released on Sep 15, 2022 and as validated by this post: https://forum.cyberlink.com/forum/posts/list/97595.page .

Perpetual user licences probably present a marketing problem for Cyberlink. I'm sure they would like to move every user to a 365 environment like pretty much all software companies these days, guaranteed income stream, less product maintenance etc. I'm a perpetual licence user and I am envious of the regularity with which new baubles are added to 365. Do I need them all, probably not but "shiny toys" are attractive. It will be interesting to see which new features appear in PD22 if it gets released..

It was very dismal last year, basically perpetual got what was released to PD365 during the year. If that lame offering repeats, it would contain at least:
AI Art Generator – AI Sticker Maker
New Launcher and Modified Menu GUI
Enhanced Title Customization
Expanded Set of AI Body Effects
Automatic Speech to Text

The need is great, but I don't need fonts, stickers, sound fx, background music, I need many core improvements and bug/anomaly fixes. Just have to wait and see what's released and if it's worth the cost on an individual basis.

Does anyone have any insight into whether there will be a next release of a perpetual license? I am on PD 20 now and upgrade every two years. I have tried to find out from Cyberlink customer service as I would upgrade to PD 21 perpetual if there is not going to be a PD 22 but no response. I guess what I might do is buy the PD 21 updgrade and not install and if there is a PD 22, I have 30 days to cancel the PD 21 upgrade and buy the PD 22 upgrade. Any other ideas/insight?

My idea: don't go for 21. It will take a few days or weeks given history before a new version will be released. I would then wait even a bit longer until there are no severe issues mentioned with this new release. And you may want to check the differences between 20 and 22, and look carefully whether it is worth your while to obtain the new version. Likely there will be a special upgrade price. Or even a discount in a few months. If you were patient enough to wait for 22, and you are still able to do everything you need with 20, it will only in the benefits of CL that you go for 22 soon, so... why not wait a bit longer.

You can upgrade to PD22 when it is released. Many do not accept the recommendation to remove the old versions for good reasons. The new versions may and do have bugs that require a few patches to iron out and to be able to use the custom templates created in the older version. Warry’s idea is sound. You can do a forum search for issues when upgrades instead of purchasing as new to save a few dollars for advantages and disadvantages from users..

I think tomasc and Warry response might be missing the main point wlammert post.

I think the main crux of the post is, will CL offer a perpetual version of PD22 or go the way of ColorDirector and no longer offer a perpetual purchase option. So wlammert would like to buy PD21 now so at least they have the most recent perpetual version to bridge them 2 years for another purchase decision. I guess the assumption would be that one can't buy PD21 perpetual once PD22 is released if PD22 has no perpetual purchase option. I don't see this as really a valid assumption, there are ways, at least in the past. As such, to be safe, wlammert idea to purchase PD21 perpetual within a 30 day window of PD22 release as a hedge is potentially viable.

Jeff is right of course. It is very well possible that CL surprises us with such a move. Would Amazon.com also immediately stop selling boxes with 21 ultimate?

With the introduction of PD 2024 ultimate, it has become apparent that perpetual version are yet still available.
Initial testing of the used interface gives the impression that it is worth it while to upgrade to 2024. It seems to work faster and smoother, although users of old versions have to get use to the new approach.
However, there are still some (old) bugs found in this new version, so it may be wise to delay the move to 2024 for a bit longer.

Still early days, my version 21 upgraded to PD2024 & I'm regretting it.

I'm usually pretty good at working with computers & software but the new version is proving to be a nightmare.

I have posted my problems on the PD 2024 section of the forum, although one post has failed to show for whatever reason. The one I do have a reply on is crop/rotate.

The problem is still ongoing though, just cannot do it all so quickly as I could with version 21. To be honest, still can't get crop/rotate to work the way I want it to. Would rather still be using version 21.

If my problem is resolved I will post again here - just trying to make people aware in case they have similar problems..

Pleased to see this post as I too am having a nightmare with PD24 and really wish I'd stuck with PD21, but I wondered if it was just me!
