24% Burning Issue, PD8 is hanging when burning

I am a new user to Cyberlink products, and so far have not been to impressed even though it came highly recommended by a friend. I have it installed on a Pentium 4, 3.ooGHz with XP Home Edition v2002 SP3 and 2.00 GB RAM.

I have created my first project (December 2009), and to this day have not been able to produced a working DVD!!! frustration or what...

I am using a USB 2.0 external Sony Optiarc AD-7201A DVD/CD writer. My project has a number of chapters, and transitions, fairly basic stuff for most regular user of PD software.

I purchased PD8 Deluxe in December 2009, and have recently downloaded the patch to upgrade it to v2220c.

The main issue I have is it hangs the application after the burning process has started at appx 24%, and goes no further. The application hasn't crashed, and my cpu is running at only a few %, so no issue there. When I cancel the burning task, it advises me that the burning will be incomplete and do I wish to proceed to cancel yes or no. Once cancelled the story board screen re appears and everything is back to normal.

Any advice would be appreciated......

Hi Martin,

Before we proceed with any potential solutions, I'd request the latest build which is 2508. Instructions on how to do so are here:

http://forum.cyberlink.com/forum/posts/list/9750.page

Then try again and see how you get on. I had a project that wouldn't get past 6% until I installed the new build!

Cheers,

Hello Martin, welcome in this forum!
What you are experiencing is - in this forum - called "Welcome to the 20%-Club"!
Most of us had to make this experience.
But there is a rather simple 'work-around'.
Your PDS script is far too complex (don't worry, nearly EVERY PDS is too complex!) to be burnt to disk immediately.
To solve this problem, you have to put an intermediate step to your work:
PRODUCE (instead of BURNING) your project into one (or several) viedo stream files - preferable MPEGs or M2TSs, so ALL of your several PDS tracks (video, sound, PiP, text, etc...) is stuffed into ONE single track - consisting of the MPEG (for example).
Then simply queque up your MPEGs into a new project, save it - and proceed to BURNING now!
Now it will work.

Good luck,
Michael.

edit: I see, Andrew was swifter with his answer. ;o)

Sorry I don't have a solution, but possibly a clue.

The only time burning has hung on me is after capturing an hour or two of video from analog tape (VHS) to an MPEG-2 file and I didn't save and exit from PDR8 before starting the burn process in PDR8. In my case I already had one long video file that was SVRT ready, and PDR8 still hung.

The only thing I can think of is that the MPEG-2 file was not fully written to the hard drive with some of it still in virtual memory, and exiting out of PDR8 flushed it out of virtual memory or something.

So, as a precaution, before starting to burn a disc, exit out of PDR8 first if you have been adding video or doing any editing.

What Xerox has mentioned is a recognised way of avoiding errors and hangs and it has worked for me on many occasions!

Once you have completed your editing and are ready to burn, exit PD8, and then restart.

Cheers,

Andrew

There is a known issue with PD8 and menu creation (with some of the built in menu templates.) Dload and swith do a less fancy menu from PDirectorZone. BTW: it seems to be ok with PD8 v2508 pre-patch but I will do a more extensive test on it later as I have submitted a ticket for the very same issue last month.

I am with Xerox. I never burn from the project. I produce final videos first. I did experience a freeze up during burning though - possibly due to a scratched blank disc. Replacing one with a new blank had solved the problem.

p.s. It takes a lot of time and resources to produce a final video. For example, an abt 10min 1080i AVCHD clip takes about 35mins to produce on my PC.

p.p.s. Martin, you might as well prove it to yourself by leaving your burning disc alone for awhile, then check substantial time later to see if you passed the deadly 24%.
Good luck. Read not to contradict and confute, nor to believe and take for granted... but to weigh and consider.

As Andy has suggested, I will attempt to leave my project burning overnight as it is a large project, and it could just be taking many hours to successfully burn it. We'll see......synical that I am.

I have post a help request from technical, and also requested an upgrade to v2508, as I believe that some of the issues in v2220c have been resolved. Not that I was aware of any issues when only using the trial version, mind you I guess a large amount of features weren't available on the trial edition.

All said and done, I followed the link to upgrade to v2508, but was only directed to CB tech help anyway. So have asked outright for an upgrade as it has only been 4 weeks since purchasing PD8 Deluxe. And it hasn't performed without issue since installing.

Can anybody suggest where to download the v2508 patch, as the CB link that Andrew has suggested only directs me to another forum, and the link placed by Dafydd Bevan - SoftDeko in that forum only directs me to CB Search Knowledge Base and Tech support, which only allows users to download v2220c upgrade not v2508........

Come on guys help me pleeeease.........lol frustration

Martin,

My understandign is that the only way to get the new build (please note patch is still unavaialble) is by requesting one by posting a ticket. I myself sent a request to the t-support this morning and awaiting.

p.s. Reducing number of history "undos" from the default 50 to zero in preferences considerably improved performace on my PC by reducing the amount of crashes during editing. You might want to take that into the account as well. Read not to contradict and confute, nor to believe and take for granted... but to weigh and consider.

Thanks for that tip Andy, I will reduce the number of undues, as I haven't really used it much anyway.

Anything is worth a try...

Thanks Andrew, for the link to build 2508. CB tech support have also agreed to send me a download link today 20th Jan. So we'll push on and hopefully have some good results.

Thanks for your comments everybody, never really used forums before now. But will definately use them more often. It's nice to know that there life outside of ones own little bubble experiencing similar issues, and to be able to exchange views.

Maybe I can contribute something constructive to another member in the future, I hope so......

Until we spk again..........happy producing :

Oh and by the way, I didn't get the opportunity to wait allnight to see if v2220c would burn off a disc.....Although I will be upgrading my system to a multi core with loads more RAM from next month. So that should greatly improve speed and performance on screen refresh rate....bfn
