So I wanted to make a start menu for a dvd but every time I try to add a video, it increases its size about 6 times the original. What am i missing here?

When making a compliant video DVD, video format, codec, bitrate, framesize are all controlled. Your mkv video would need to be encoded to proper requirements, hence the filesize change.

PowerDirector will take the content you put on the timeline, your mkv file, and encode it to proper standards to create a DVD compliant menu of the video. This process is what creates the larger file size you note.

You attached the screenshot for properties/general instead of the details tab which would give the dimensions of the resolution, video bit rate, and audio details of that mkv file needed. Change the AR to 4:3 and select the EP mode to create it. It is possible that the file size will be 600 mb with DD stereo audio selected.
