Hi8 tape capture problems with PowerDirector8

I just bought Media Suite with PD8. I am trying to capture videos from a Sony DCR-TRV480 Hi8 camcorder. I used to be able to capture video using the firewire cable. PD8 only captures about 2 to 3 seconds and stops. I will not capture video. I tried connecting the Y/R/W RCA jacks to input jacks on the front of the computer, but the computer does not recognize the video from there. I don't have a lot of experience with video capture, but I used to be able to do it with the firewire. How can you get PD8 to capture Hi8mm tape video? Thanks for your input.

I am experiencing the same problem with my Sony dcr-trv 480 ; but only it seems on same 8mm tapes (the older ones). It captures fine on the new ones; as well from another camcorder.

Thus it seems to capture "some" 8MM tapes- but not all from my dcr-trv-480. It seems to be a cyberlink bug? BTW- with the camera unplugged from the PC it plays the tapes fine- it's only when connected to cyberlink that it stops capturing.

The camcorder is not the issue as it plays the tapes fines- but when plugged in via firewire to PowerDirector 8 - it captures for only several seconds and stops.

What is going on- how do I fix it?

REMOVED

Need a fix or returning for refund !?

The old format, Sony's Hi8 and the control capture has not been supported since version 7.

Use RCA connections to capture.

Thank you Dafydd - I bought the Cyberlink software because of it's easier interface and I WANT it to work for me.

To that end- I wanted to figure out how to use it to capture my old 8mm videos. I am not a technical guru - nor should I need to be. I simply want a software that captures all my 8mm videos.

Now- your answer that the software does not support SONY Hi 8 is NOT correct - at least entirely. I AM able to capture 8MM from my Sony TVR 480 camera. However, for some reason only from certain brands of 8MM tapes. The older ones ( circa 1989 thru say 1995) are the ones which have issues with the capture process stopping after only a few seconds. It again is not the camcorder. Now perhaps the issue is related to the fact that different Sony camcorders between 1989 and 2000 were used to film. Nevertheless- another software does work on all my 8mm video.

While not meaning to denegrate the software I chose to spend money on - it did seem odd that another software would work capturing ALL my 8mm tapes.

What is the solution to my issue ? Is the answer simply that the software CANNOT do what I need it to do- which is to capture video from all my 8mm films? I was actually hoping the was a workaround or a patch.

You suggested using RCA jacks- to do this it seems I would need to spend more money for some type of interface card to plug into my PC. Does not seem acceptable as a solution. Am I missing something?

Bottom line- I do like the software interface which is the reason I PAID for it. But I need it to be able to capture all my 8MM videos- otherwise it is useless.

Do you have a digital video camera?
Many models have a AV to DV function.
You might be able to connect the old camera to the new camera to the computer, it's not a big deal actually, and it will convert.
I do this for Hi8 and for VHS. HP Envy Phoenix/4thGen i7-4770(4@3.4GHz~turbo>3.9)
Nvidia GTX 960(4GB)/16GB DDR3/
Canon Vixia HV30/HF-M40/HF-M41/HF-G20/Olympus E-PL5.
Tape capture using 6 VCR, TBC-1000, Elite BVP4+, Sony D8 camcorder with TBC.

Thanks for offering help !

Not sure I understand- but I have two cameras boths have digital output via firewire. One camera is Hi 8MM the other is a DV format.

What do you mean connect the two cameras- do you mean somehow (?) connecting the Hi 8MM to the DV camera which is finally connected via firewire to the computer?

Wow- seems like a lot of trouble, please elaborate.

Does anyone know if Cyberlink is planning on offering a update to allow the firewire to be used with Hi8 tapes? I tried connecting the camera through the RCA jacks on the front of the computer, but the camera is not recognized by Cyberlink. Any thoughts on how to get the RCA jacks working on a HP Pavillion m9150F computer? I currently have no way to capture video from the upgraded Cyberlink8. It used to work with the older produts, but it does not after the $98 upgrade. Another question; is there a difference in quality when capturing through the RCA jacks vrs the firewire?
Thanks

I have done it like this, but was forced to use WMM for the capture.
By the way, editing is often a multi-program endeavor.
It's impossible that every program will work with every camera and every OS.
PD comes close.
So then, RCA cables from analog camera to digital camera ( this of course depends on your digicam having the conversion ability).
Digicam to computer via firewire.
This will work also to get your vcr tapes digitized, you do not really need to get a converter, you might already have one!
Last, I must admit, the Hi8 camera with firewire seems like it should work.
PD is a SUPER editor, but if it will not properly capture your tape, really, see if WMM will, then go on with your life! Editing with PD is a BLAST!

Kenneth- Seems you and I may be experiencing identical issues.

My Hi 8MM does work via firewire- but only with videos I shot after around 1995 which I think is linked to the camera I changed to.

Have you tried it with all your 8MM tapes - I wish I had while still using the free trial version of this software.

Hopefully Cyber will write a patch fix ( hint hint hint hint)

Thanks- I agree the interface of the software is good.

So sorry, WMM is Windows Movie Maker, it's free, you might even have it in your system right now.
You'll need the version, 2.6 maybe? Someone please correct me!
The LIVE WMM (newest) does not capture.

XP version is v2.6
Vista is v6, should work with Windows 7.
Do some of your own investigating, there is alot of info out there.

George,

One solution may be to see if you can get the older version of PD (6.5 or 7) and they may capture. I had a couple movie making softwares that came with my computer and I had no problem capturing. I believe I captured with PD6.5 -- maybe someone can confirm. Of course you loose the benefits of the additional editing features offered by PD8! I don't know if you can have them both running on the same machine? I also have a little program preloaded on a HP computer called muvee which I know captures my Hi8 movies. I don't have any regular 8mm, all mine are Hi8. If no patch is coming, it sounds like it will be a two program/two step process. I seems very surprising this happened.

I have Microsoft Movie Maker version 6.0. I does record video from my Sony Hi8 camcorder through the firewire. Hope this helps.

The solution that works is to use the "other" company's free trial software to capture directly from my Sony 8mm camera and then to import the rendered file into PowerDirector 8. It's crazy and a PIA - but it works.

I cannot seem to locate a download for WMM version 6- as it appears it was integral only to MS Vista. My OS is WIN 7 64 bit and does not come loaded with WMM. I did download WMM version 2.6 but alas no rendering capability.

Be nice if a patch could be issued by "tech support" to fix it right.

I have the same issue...
I downloaded the trial version of Power Director 8.
I hooked up my Sony Digital Camcorder DCR-TRV460 via Firewire. When I go to capture video, the camera starts to play then shuts down after like 5 seconds. It captures only 5 secs of video.
I'm able to capture video thru Windows Movie Maker and AVS Video Editor with no issues.
My PC is Dell XPS 420: Vista 64bit, 8gb RAM.

Time code is 0

I read come really good reviews on this and would like to purchase it. But this is an obvious problem.

It looks like a found the fix. I found in another forum for PD7.

In Preferences>capture>DV parameters.

Uncheck both "auto stop" check boxes. Seems to work okay now.

I'm using the Trial Version & I found this fix in another forum. It seems to be working.
Hope it works for all.

I'm using a Sony DCR-TRV460 and using original 8mm tape.

In Preferences>capture>DV parameters.

Uncheck both "auto stop" check boxes. Seems to work okay now.
