Media Source Error - could not stretch or position media imported

I keep getting this error when producing my video: Media Source Error - could not stretch or position media imported...

When I close the error message Powerdirector freezes so I have to end the program via task manager and restart the program.

I don't see anything wrong. I'm using .MTS files, one mp3 music track and a couple of .PNG overlay images.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Lee,
Please can you attach an image of the Video Track?

Hi Lee,
What's the source of your mp3 file?

Please can you recreate the mp3 by putting it in an Audio Editor?
Bring the new mp3 back into PD and give me a report.

I use Audacity (Free editor)
Join and visit: http://seemyworldonvideo.com/pages/extras-news-items.html
Lots of extras for PD editors.

Lee, what's the spec of your computer?
I see none of the Shadow Edit files have been created - icon's haven't changed in the media Library.

Have you seen this, please add your spec?

Hi Dafydd, I removed the MP3 file completely to see if this was causing the problem, however after 50% the error message popped up again.

I've added my system and camera specs to the threads you have given. My computer is only a couple of weeks old and pretty good specs, hopefully good enough to use PD.

Maybe I have a corrupt file somewhere.

I guess I could start again with editing but I don't want to loose the work I've already done.

Thanks for your help so far.

Hi Lee,
The error message is not one I've come across in that form... more on that in a minute.

I have looked at your spec and you don't need to create Shadow Edit files - I don't and you can see my spec.

PD Open > Edit > Preferences (or Alt+C shortcut)
General tab > untick/uncheck "Enable file processing....

You can delete the shadow files on your system - your system/PD should no longer be reliant upon them.

If you have a pop up asking you about creating shadow files, select no.

By removing the shadow creation bit for your system, you should have a faster edit process.

Tip/suggestion. Save multiple pds files and remove portions and check to see if you can isolate the media file causing the problem (if it is).

OK it's working now.

Thanks for the advise about shadow files, I disabled this and suddenly all my music waveforms are now showing. Also with this disabled it speeds things up a little.

OK next I removed all videos not used from the video library. I then saved this project as a new project with new name, and produced the movie with the default H.264 profile rather than my custom HD profile.

So by changing the above I was able to produce and save the movie file without the error.

Hi Lee,

I have one more "tip" for you.

PD Open > Edit > Preferences (or Alt+C shortcut)
Confirmation tab > untick/uncheck "Enable file file deletion from hard drive"

I've mention this because it is so easy to delete from disc by right licking on a file in the Media Library and selecting the wrong option. The right option is to Remove from Library.

I also opt not to have TV or Aspect prompts but that's for you to decide.

Oh, I remove unwanted media from the Library also.

Hi Dafydd, good idea about disabling file deletion from disk. It's very easy to make a mistake and delete important files.

Footnote correction:
The error message which Lee posted has been seen by me before. Robert (http://forum.cyberlink.com/forum/user/profile/73114.page) has provided me an image a while ago. I have just come across the image he sent me while checking up on the AVCHD 32bit issue he's reported.

Sorry for the mistake - my brain does leak!

I had that error message come up all the time with PD7 when ever I tried to use the Stabilisation module slider to full. I am testing my memory now but people on less powerful machines than mine were having no problem using the stabilisation module even on my test videos I sent them.

I re-installed windows with nothing on it other than PD7 with the same error message, I even upgraded my machine with a new motherboard, cpu & ram, with only my Nvidia 9800GT graphics card, my digital TV card and hard drives left over from my old machine and I still had the same error message.

After moving to PD8 I do not get that error message any more......sorry I couldn't resist....I now get other error messages. I know Cyberlink are working on it and other manufacturers are having similar problems with the new video codec's, it would be nice to just once edit my videos without work arounds. I have also seen this message, but I have been messing around with too many variables to isolate it just yet. When rendering failed and message appeared (exactly as in screen shot provided by Lee) I also had to kill PD8 in Task Manager. The resulting video was playable though, right up to point of failure. This seemed to point to a clip to which I applied speed adjustment (slowed down to 33%).

Will try removing any such adjustments and see if I can isolate this. But it also seems to depend on what the output format is. (Note that my source files are Canon MTS AVCHD). Also, after reading this post, I've just disabled Shadow File creation.

Sorry, but I'm getting a bit frustrated, battling this as well as fairly frequent application hangs (Standard Win7 "Program has stopped responding" error message) while doing nothing in particular, like saving my project. That combined with having to reduce the number of cores my i7 chip is using to get around another problem... groan! (although I'm successfully running on 4 of 8 cores now).

I'm beginning to wonder if it wouldn't be better to convert my original footage into something like standard mp4 and avoid AVCHD editing all together. It strikes me that if high end modern rigs like mine can't properly deal with these codecs, maybe I'm asking too much of the software...

Any feedback from more experienced PD8 users would be appreciated. I'm very new at PD...

----------------EDIT------------------

Ok, I isolated this problem to a clip that I had slowed down - rendering failed at the exact time stamp of the start of this clip. Disabling the speed adjustment for this clip allowed rendering to complete (AVCHD 1920x1080) successfully. Oddly, in the same project I had a another clip that I had slowed down, and it did not cause any trouble.

Now for more confusion... I decided to try rendering to MPEG-2 1920x1080 and this time PD8 crashed (standard Win7 Application has stopped working message - Application PDR8.exe, Fault Module StackHash_963a). This crash occurred precisely at the start of another clip to which I had applied a Crop. So I guess I'm having problems rendering 1080 with Power Tools effects.

Note that I am currently running with 4 of 8 cores enabled on my i7.

I thought I should check the exact nature of my source Canon MTS files, and they are as follows:

Video................
Type: H.264 AVC
Birate: 23.09 Mbps
Resolution: 1920x1080
Frame rate: 29.97 fps
Aspect Ratio: 16:9

Audio................
Type: Dolby Digital
Sampling rate: 48kHz
Bitrate: 256Kbps
Channel: Stereo

I am really a noob when it comes to formats, bitrates, frame rates etc., so if anyone out there can point me to thread that sheds some light on this, and ideally can point me to some preferred settings for the camera and rendering, I'd be grateful!

Thanks

Well, I'm having the same issue... different spot everytime I produce the same video...I'm thinking I have to give up on this application. Crashes for no reason, won't produce any edits. What's the point? Joe

I have the same problem, even just producing 2x 10 second clips with a transition between them fails.
delete the transition it works fine.
The clips are both AVCHD 1920 x 1080 24 Mbps (canon) and the output format's the same.
System is I7-860, 3Gb Ram, Windows 7 (32), PNY 9800 GT (1GB).
anyone heard of a fix yet ?

Roger P,

And you have which build of PowerDirector, with the latest patch?

And have you checked the H.264 AVC option?

hi Dafydd
I've tried with and without the "allow SVRT on H.264" if that's the option your refering to, both ways it's fine with no transitions but gives the error as soon as it gets to the transition during produce.
Produce settings are 1920x1080 (24Mbps) same as the input files
Fails everytime on 1920x1080 (24Mbps), almost everytime on 1920x1080

2x Test files are only about 20 seconds long each with / without a single transition in the middle (tried several- all seem to do the same)
