Like the title says, is there a way to split the audio and video so that if I'm talking to camera then I can interupt the video with a different clip but keep the audio going and then return to the original video afterwards?

Yes. Select a clip then right-click and choose Link/Unlink Video and Audion, then click anywhere to deselect the now separate tracks.
