Proxy/Shadow files: indication? creation? location?

PD18 allows or even strongly suggests use of proxy files for editing performance of HD clips. Some queries on this feature:
1. Does the timeline clip display any icon or other indication to indicate a proxy file is in use?
2. if that feature is enabled, is the proxy file automatically created?
3. if the project indicates a proxy file exists but cannot find it, is it re-created automatically?
4. where are those proxy files located/stored on the PC? An option to specify that location isn't provided.

1) Orange movie strip icon in the lower left corner goes from orange to green in the media library when file created
2) yes, when video is of high enough quality
3) yes
4) pref > File > Export folder:, in a hidden file called ShadowEditFiles
