Is there any way to achive a smooth transition from normal speed to either slow motion or speeded up motion (ie acceleration or decelleration) within PD 18, I can nonly find a simple on or off option in the Power Tolls/ Speed menu

This is what the ease in/out control options are for. Check out this old tutorial that introduces the concept, but it is available in the video speed feature in PowerDirector 18.
