Is there a qualitative difference between the results of using the Pan&Zoom powertool or just using the PIP to zoom into a portion of a clip?

I realize that the P&Z is used for different purposes, but is there a difference in the resolution, etc of the clip?

There is no difference in output quality, since the same source clip is used in both cases. The only real differences are in the control over the pan and zoom that each tool gives you.

You can think of the P&Z tool as a quick and easy way to add that effect to a clip, and there is also the ability to customize the starting and ending locations, as well as the zoom level.

PiP keyframes will give you absolute control of all aspects, including doing multiple directional changes and/or zoom levels, and also pausing and making any other changes you'd like to add.
