Hi,

I've just started to use PD7 and I'm really happy with the software but...

I changed the background image on a DVD (having created a nice crisp 1920x1080 GIF file to use for a 16:9 AR ratio production), but when I viewed the burnt DVD the menu image was very blurry...

Can anyone help with suggestions on how to get nice crisp menus?

Thanks

DVD PAL resolution is 720x576.
DVD NTSC 720x480.
Both values are different than 1920x1080, so your background has to be compressed.
That is your problem.

Hi David -

I think the problem may be with making your image in .gif format. Gifs support a maximum of 256 colours. They're mainly used for animation and on the web because of their smaller size and quick loading.

If you want to make an image the best it can be on your menu, I'd suggest using .png which has lossless compression, or .jpeg where you can adjust the compression to improve quality (increases file size).

Hope that helps - Tony

Are you sure ?
I think that is true as for ONE BLOCK of the picture not WHOLE picture, so when we'll use more blocks the quality of the GIF picture is excellent.

Hi Gregorz -

Reasonably sure... but here are some references:

http://webdesign.about.com/od/graphics/a/aa100906.htm
http://www.mariosalexandrou.com/definition/gif.asp
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Graphics_Interchange_Format

Obviously, as you said, the profile quality selected for burning will have an impact on crispness.

Cheers - Tony

Hi Tony,

I am not an expert in picture formats, but have a little bit knowledge.
Around the GIF formats arose many myths, one of this is a subject what are we talking about.
As I mentioned in my previous post, GIF specifitation doesn't have any restrictions in relation to the whole picture's color deep (only to the BLOCK), but most of the software IS ABLE to keep ONE block per FRAME, so this in not GIF but software problem.

Next myth is an answer for the questioin: is this GIF is a loseless format or not ?
Some says LOSE, but this is not rue. LOSELESS (as for algorithm).

cheers

Thanks for all the replies...

Gregorz - are these resolutions for 16:9 AR?

If I use Photoshop to create the .PNG's what Pixel aspect ratio should I be using - "Square" or "DV PAL Widescreen (1.46)"?

I looked at the menu VOB created by PD in gSpot, and it was reporting a KBPS or 800-1000, whilst a menu VOB created by a video editing company we use, which is crystal clear, has a KBPS of 7000 - is there anyway to adjust the quality setting that the menus are rendered with?

- In my opinion PAL resolution is a "rigid" value and does not depend on aspect ratio.
- I would use DV PAL Widescreen
- probably you have chosen VBR compression method, so still pictures or slow moving (as menus are) are coding with slower speed. If you wanna do it faster, use CBR coding method.

still sorry for my English

I assume this is only of use when using the "produce" menu, and not when burning DVD's. The DVD menus are created in the "Create Disk" menu.

Yepppp!
You are definitely right, so seems to me that this value (1000 kb/s) is "hard coded" in the software (in my opinion it is not a problem) "My job makes my life possible but my job is not my life"
