I have an HD camera that is capable of filming .mov at 720p (30fps), 720p (60fps) & 1080p (30fps). If I have a combination of all three in a PD8 project do I need to set the disc preferences to the lowest value (720p) or if I set it to the highest value (1080p) will PD8 upscale?

Also, what is the best value to select as TV format PAL(25fps) or NTSC(30fps)?

Thanks

Hi Bevan,

I believe selecting an output to 1080p will be fine for all your video. Maybe produce a video in 1080p before burning to disc to test the quality.

As for the TV format, it completely depends on where you are located and where you will play the video, for example the EU and Australia mainly use PAL, but North America and some parts of Asia use NTSC.

See this page and the map for more info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pal

David

Thanks David,

I realise my area is PAL (25fps) but I was interested in whether NTSC would be a better choice at 30fps as the video I have captured is 30fps and 60fps. Is anything lost in the conversion to PAL?

Thanks

Hi Bevan,

This is not a definitive answer (if indeed there is one!) but these might be worth reading in case anything is useful.

Hi Bevan,

In addition to Adrian's outstanding explanation of video formats and the multitude of options etc. may I share my experience in relation to your second question ...
what is the best value to select as TV format PAL(25fps) or NTSC(30fps)?
I have a Panasonic SD9 which is a high definition NTSC camera and produces AVCHD format files. As I live in Australia, I tried to convert this footage from NTSC to PAL as part of my workflow to create a DVD.

PD could not create a smooth picture and after trying many different software, I gave up. The results were sub-standard - every 6th frame seemed to be dropped (to reduce 30 frames per second to 25 frames) and the video appeared jerky.

Eventually I decided to happily accept NTSC and get the benefit of smoother motion, given the larger number of frames per second. Most modern DVD players can easily display both NTSC and PAL, so there should be no issue there.

Hope this helps.

Cheers
