Windows 7 Support
[Post New]
Hello everyone; this is my first post here, after trying out several other Video editing packages I decided to go for PowerDirector 7 Ultra due to its ease of use and due to the fact that the trial installed and worked like a charm with Windows 7.

However after uninstalling the trial version and installing the full product I have experienced some issues such as crashes and some features are not working properly, I'm using it on Windows 7 build 7100 RC, my computer has an Intel i7-920 Processor at 2.66GHz with 1GB RADEON HD 4850 by ATI and 6.00 GB DDR3 of RAM.

Any ideas when we will have a Windows 7 compatible build or at least a beta build to try in Windows 7? this is in fact the ONLY software I'm having problems with in Windows 7 which is a shame cause I love it.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Ely -

Sounds like a nice rig you're driving. Wanna swap? Mine works fine with PD7!

I am not aware of incompatibilities with Win7 - I know some Vista 64 users have trouble.

When you did your uninstall, was it completely uninstalled? Any registry issues? I usually use Windows Install Clean up to make sure everything's ditched. Worth a thought anyway.

Cheers -

Tony

I don't have windows 7 but I do have the same i7 chip as your, 2 gig of ram and an Nvidia 9800GT video card.

I am having trouble saving any 1920X1080 video after the deshaker module has been used. If I don't use the deshaker module there is no problem or if I save it to a smaller size, it is the 1920X1080 that is causing the problem.

I have re-installed windows vista 32 and it worked fine for the first video, then would not work for the next or even the first one I tried.

It would be good if you could download this 8 meg 1920X1080 video and see if you can save to file as either MPEG2 or AVCMPEG4 at 1920X1080.

I have a feeling the trouble is more to do with the 8 cores in the CPU than the operating system.

Cheers

Hello Robert, I was able to save it to both formats like you asked with no problems, the first file was an .m2ts type of file, is that what it is supposed to be? sorry for my ignorance but Im pretty new to the whole video editing thing, the second resulting file was an .mpeg type of file, I'm running Windows 7 7100 RC x64BIT I think you are running the x32BIT one?

Thanks Ely, I guess for some reason I have a problem with saving to 1920X1080 I don't know what else to try as I have re-installed windows, I am all updated with drivers etc etc I even updated to Service pack 2 last night, still having problems. You are right I have Vista 32 installed.

I am also new to video editing, so I can't help you much about formats, .m2ts and .mpeg. All I do know is video editing for the general public is still in the early stages and is a bit of a pot luck with editing the new video formats. No problem, also I might be mistaken but I think you need to have the right codecs installed on your computer for video editing programs to work properly, are you sure you have a good codecs package installed on your system? I always install the K-Lite Codec Pack in all my Windows installs along with the ffdshow audio and video codecs which come with K-Lite and are optional to install or not when you install K-Lite, this always helps not only to watch all types of weird or standard video files but also to work with them.

Thanks Ely, yes I had K-Lite Codec Pack installed on my last installation but not this new one. I actually thought it may have been causing the problem that is why I have not installed it this time. I will try it again though as I have nothing to loose at this stage. My youtube channel====> http://www.youtube.com/user/relate2?feature=mhsn

Ely,

Problem you are having may be the common one of "stuff left behind" in the uninstall of PD7 trial version. Try uninstalling (be sure your full product is safe on a disk or external hard drive) then run a good registry cleaner (some run this twice). After that install the purchased version and it should run clean.

It seems PD7 is one of those programs that leaves behind entries in the registry than cause problems with the next install.

Let us know if the procedure above helps. It has for quite a few here.

Ely, so I don't crash into your thread any more, just to let you know I installed the K-lite codec pack, the latest edition 4.8.8 and still no go. I can save as any size up to 1440X1080 but as soon as I go to 1920X1080 it crashes and yet it did the first one fine. I give up and will wait for the next patch.

Just for you info here is a reply I got from tech support regarding completely uninstalling PowerDirector along with which registry entries to delete. The instructions are not very clear but it may help you.

Thanks Bif and Robert, your info is greatly appreciated, however it seems like the problems have gone away, PowerDirector fixed itself or managed to find its own way in Windows 7? lol, I don't know but after the second reboot of the PC the problems are no longer happening.

As mentioned earlier on this thread I had the trial version installed, so I did not uninstall the trial by itself but rather just hit the installer of the paid version and expected it to work properly, its supposed to remove the trial version and install the new one, it looked as it did it fine at first but then the crashes told me otherwise, so I went ahead and did a system restore, then normally removed the trial version, rebooted the PC and installed the paid version fresh on the system, first it still crashed on some tasks but after a second reboot after clean install it's working good so far.

Only problem that I kept having was the Registration Window poping up every time I started the program, and no matter if I registered 10 times it kept asking me to register the software, so I just went into the program folder and renamed the registration module and it hasn't bugged me anymore.

I'm loving this program so far, so easy to use and so many nice features! I had installed all major player competitor's packages and they look too complicated to use for a novice like me, so despite the little problems I think I made the right choice with PowerDirector 7, can't wait for new versions to try out.

I've also experienced no problems so far with Powerdirector 7 Ultra in Windows 7 x64, except for the repeating registration window. It works exactly the same as in Windows XP x64.

As far as I know, this new Windows 7 RC is the beta, good until June 2010.

I am using K-Lite Mega codec pack for all my encoding, mainly ffdshow XviD. The computer has an Asus M2N-E mobo, Athlon 64 x2 6100, 8GB RAM, Sapphire Radeon HD4850 1GB OC, and Hauppauge WinTV-HVR-1800 for recording from TV or streaming input. Your crash problem could be a codec as mentioned above or a driver problem. Did you install the latest video drivers from the manufacturer, or are you relying on the ones installed by Windows 7?

I do have one persistent problem with PD7, which is in the settings. I can change the codec OK, but if I open the audio settings, the program crashes every time. I think there is some incompatibility there with 64-bit. I don't have a pressing need to change the audio settings, so I just leave them be.

Windows 7 does have an abundance of audio pops, especially when a program opens, or opens an alert, or if there is a sudden change of sound in a video. I think the base driver in 7 is slow. I installed the manufacturer drivers for my on board sound, but they are rather old. It was the only way I could get quad sound to work. Windows 7, for some reason, only uses the two front speakers unless it is set for an incorrect 5.1 (I only have quad with a zombie subwoofer (not an independent channel.))
