Producing DVD with PD13, Only Using 2.4Gigs?, UDF?, Warning too big?

I have produced two documentaries, both in PD13. Wrote first one think used WindowsDVD maker as think had problems with PD13. On this one tried to use PD13. Like the "Cinemactic" Template. On Windows DVD Maker it seemed to use full disc on prior movie which is about same run length.

Equipment strong i7 PC with Windows 7 and 16 gigs Ram. Used Create Disc and 2D Disc on PD13menus. It is 01:12:57:1 long, says 4699mb /4700mb at bottom left before produce. Had no problems or glitches creating the video and outside of warning the movie was a few MBs biiger than disc no problems writing DVD.

It worked and decent video quality. However looking at disc seems only was about 50% written/used??

  1. Could not run directory on disc but it says zero bytes free of 2.04 Gigs and for system properties UDF. The 3 discs have created work to the end of movie and seem of DVD quality but visually it appears only inner half of DVD is written. When I click to see files, it says Windows cannot access the specified device?? Any thoughts. Screen shot attached.

2. I am new to producing DVDs. see this
Below is a listing of DVD recording times:
XP - 1 Hour
SP - 2 Hours

I am 1hr 13mins so is it defaulting to SP and that is why disc is half written? Seems when used Windows DVD Maker it filled the disc and it was also about 1hr and 15 mins long and made from PD13 too. Seems it would be best for softwareto figure out how long it is and the adjust the bitrate and use 99% of it. I selected DVD 4.7GB on Create Disc.

3. It warned me on Start Burning that the movie was 30 or 50 megs bigger than the disc (on all three discs made which are HP 4.7G which have been trouble free on prior writes) I overode the warning and it wrote it with results mentioned above. I will be going into replication in fact need to ship master ASAP, but do not want to throw away quality by using half the disc.

Any help form more experienced people will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

AH, see it is set to Smart Fit, so should use full disc, correct?

either your DvD rw got old real quick, quicker than you, and or got a crappy dvd blanks... try a different brand... dvd rw is recognizing as 1hr mini-dvd discs. what about a firmware update???
go ahead and burn the whole project to a FOLDER option. then use ImgBurn to finish... here's the ImgBurn 2.5.8 - without OpenCandy! . for an enquring mind wants to know, opencandy is a malware!
widescreen dvds takes up more space so does choice of the audio codecs. in that case make sure to use the SMARTFIT option when burning to the folder or disc!
make sure to have AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS folders are present when burning with ImgBurn.

other thread you complained about titles getting chopped off. make sure you're working in 4x3 workspace and using 4x3 titles. 4x3 titles don't have any problems in 16x9 workspace just squeezed little bit... also activate TV safe zone so you don't over write off the screen resolution!

Thanks Pepsiman for answer!

It is set to smartfit have attached an extra screen shot of DVD write selections on the first post here in last few mins, see if that matches your idea on this. Was thinking about writing to HD too first, maybe do that.

On Titles in original movie am moving them inward a little manually, fortunately it was just a few, and like fact on my 16:9 50" TV its using the whole sceren, looks good and most people do have 16:9.

Hmm on your "dvd rw is recognizing as 1hr mini-dvd discs" The discs are LABELED HP DVD-R 16X 4.7g 120MINS, never had an issue and have burned 3 of them. Just used weeks ago for another movie in Windows DVD Writer and zero issues.

Could it be something else. Do not recall seeing UDF as a file type before. Is that a hint of issue?

I have not written to folder yet, have been working on movie. Have moved titles enough believe have solved that issue and will leave as is. What will be lost on outside edge is acceptable now.

Thanks

An update. I selected Max Quality then went back to SmartFit, on Max Quality it compained the disc was a few sectors shy of being big enough, then went to SmartFit as mentioned already and the warning went away.

So started burning, all seemed good, guessing problem over, then error at 90%, screen shot attached.

Think first time ever got that error, any thoughts?

Visually looking at disc, it seems it was written to same place (about 2/3s of diameter) as teh ones that were complete and seemed decent quality. I may haveto go to Windows DVD writer to write this disc. This last one willnot play at all.

A full screenshot would have been more helpful. More than likely you may have used up computer resources to cause this. Try this: Save the project. Shut down the pc. After a minute power the pc back up. Open PD13 with the saved project. Check Create a folder. Check to see that the settings on the left of your screenshot did not change. That can happen depending on the patch version used. It will probably be okay this time unless you have a bad spot in your editing

I did try that. After reboot with both smartfit and HQ. Smartfit used 2/3s of disc visually. On Dir it says 0 bytes free of 2.05 Gigs, and has 2 VTS files of 1 gig each inside. And the its the full 74 min video with good looking quality.

It does say UDF for drive, maybe a hint do not recall that. Well just checked and found a 2 month old DVD same batch with 4 gigs on it and not made by PD13 and it says UDF too, so maybe scracth that clue.

When produced HQ DVD it complained about 0.5% too few sectors to write, then I overrode warning, it worked and again visually wrote only 2/3s of disc and again had full movie on it.

I will buy some more discs, but do not think that is it. Have been using the same batch for last year with never a problem, now in 8 disc writes in a row every time it is only using 2 gigs of disc. The only solace, the quality looks decent on 50" set and is full 74 min video.

Any ideas?

For some reason it does sound like your PD13 is not the latest patched version. Try this: Change the dvd type setting from 4.7 to 8.5 GB. Check Create a folder. More than likely the 74 minute video will fit a 4.7 GB disc and fill it to 4 GB instead of the 2 GB you have now.

Hmmm, will try that

Edit: Did it thought it worked and ... still just writing 2 Gigs, am going to store for new DVDs, maybe try patch first.

There are no patches "Click the available tabs to see the Updates, Upgrades, and enhancements (Installed Packs) available." nothing shows up in either folder.

Well bought new disc (memorex this time) had no effect. Writing as 4.7g or 8.5 gig no effect.

PD13 is just set on writing this 74 minute video as only 2 of 4.7 gigs, Smart, HQ makes no difference. Frustrating and has never hapened before. At this point will ship the 2 gig disc to replication house.

At least it looks decent.

Am creating disc image right now, if it is full size then may use another burner to burn DVD?

Even to hard drive PD13 insists on only producing 2 Gigs, image attached.

Is there any way I can get the full 4.7 gigs out? A work around?

It is good that you sent a full screenshot this time so we don’t have to fill in the blanks and guess the missing pieces. It is all very clear now. You have a second extended monitor. I have not had the problem you described in PD13. Problems like this are sometimes solved with the latest patch like build 3516.
There are two ways that I know of to get 4 GB + on your dvd. First way is already given earlier.

  1. At the top left of your screenshot change the DVD 4.7 GB to 8.5 GB. Change the SmartFit to HQ-Best Quality. Check the Create a Folder. Uncheck Save as a Disc Image. The created folder can probably be burned to a 4.7 GB blank DVD+RW using Power2Go, or any disc burning software or by using Windows itself.

  2. If The Created folder is slightly too large then you can Produce a mpeg-2 720 x 480/60i at 7.5 Mbps using a custom profile. You can then author (create chapters) and burn to disc with the hardware encoder unchecked as you already have done.

  3. 3 rd method is not necessary as producing the project at a lower bitrate and then creating that folder should do it.

The above methods do work and is verified by users in this forum in the past.

Hi Tomasc, I just did #1 and again it wrote 2 gigs

Something is forcing it to write 2 gigs only and this has never happened before. Screen attached. And should not have to tell it 8.5 gigs to get 4 gigs. I have produced it as 10mbps 1080 WMV and it did it, noticiably higher video quality, it is writing to DVD or equiv that triggers this 2 gig issue.

How can I patch it when it says there are no newer patches?

Just a thought (hope I've not missed something in the thread) are you writing an ISO to folder? Could it be that the drive is formatted FAT32 which has a 2GB file size limit?
