I specificaly purchased the PD16 upgrade because it was advertised as supporting MOV's. Tired of transcoding before editing.

First time I go to import an MOV - error messaage - unsupported format. Really? Most Pro and semi-pro cameras record to ProRes.

Is this file type supported or not? Media Info screen grab attached.

Thanks,

Scred

welcome to the forum.

if you've read it correctly, then it says import only...

Format Support

since you can't import the .MOV container into the workspace you need to address to CL support.

output is 8bit 4.2.0 .MP4 container... or others except .MOV...

oh happy happy joy joy

Hi,

On a quick test of 4 sample ProRes files running PDR16 Ultimate v.2127, 3 imported to the media library and timeline, one did not. The attached image shows the media info for all 4, with the failed import highlighted in yellow.

It would be worth contacting Technical Support to clarify if there are any specific criteria that operate for ProRes import.

Cheers

As an afterthought, are your clips 10bit? Could you check and report back/

The video file is in ProRes 422LT. To the best of my knowledge, ProRes is always 10-bit (minimum). MediaInfo does not show bit/colour depth.

Hi,

Yes I would assume 10bit as well, although there is a great deal of confusion about bit depth and actually finding out what it is in the data stream. I also think that ProRes does "support" 8 bit in some cases.

If it is 10 bit, then I know that CL have only just implemented some forms of 10 bit support (I think), so I wonder if some ProRes files are thrown out, but others are processed?

You are correct in that MediaInfo does not report bit depth for ProRes files, although it does for most other containers.

I think Tech Support will be the only sure way to get a definitive opinion.

Thanks for the input.

Here is what I received from Tech Support:

With reference to your query, we like to inform you that the PowerDirector 16 support MOV (H.264/alpha PNG format) for importing. For more information about formats kindly follow the link below:

It strikes me that the yellow marked file has a resolution of 4 480 x 1 980. (2.35:1) might this be the problem?

Hopefully they'll expand .MOV compatibility in a future update. In the mean time, I'll use DaVinci Resolve (Free) for basic editing of ProRes files.

Thanks again for the input.

A little story... I had PD15.0.3929.0 installed on my system prior to a catastrophic system disc crash. This was on a Win 10x64 system which had been upgraded from Win 7. For various reasons, I needed to do a clean install. Prior to the install, I had PD15 happily importing ProRes 422LT (apcs Codec ID). Afterward, it would only see these files as audio files.

Figuring that my problem was that I was missing something installed earlier, I figured I should try QuickTime. I just installed the QT_Lite_410 "lite" version of QuickTime from Filehippo. Once again, PD15 is happily importing, viewing and editing my file!

WARNING - several versions of QT_Lite_410.exe that I found via Google had virus infections. The one from FileHippo was clean. I always run questionable files through VirusTotal (https://www.virustotal.com).

Hopefully this helps!
