Suggestions on an PC upgrade

Hi!

I'm considering an upgrade of my PC in order to make PD14 run smoother when it comes to rendering and general performance handling large (1000+) amounts of clips in a project. Usually, it works fine, but the rendering process sometimes crashes when I'm creating a Blu-ray image, even with smaller amounts of data (12-15 GB @ 1,5h film usually works, 21 GB @ 2-2,5h film works sometimes but not always - I assume effects and such also affects).

That's one reason to upgrade, the other is the "why not? It's fun"-factor!

I'm currently running an Intel i7 950 3Ghz processor (quad core, but an older model) with 12 GB RAM and a gaming card with 4GB memory. Win 10 Pro 64bit.

So, I'm thinking - what to focus on in order to be able to keep on running high demanding games but also to have a better capacity for running PD14?

A new processor (which likely will mean a new motherboard too)? More memory (24GB is the limit for my current motherboard)? Change graphic card? Or maybe a little of everything?

Any suggestions?

welcome to the forum.

what is your budget???

remember, early adapters pay the price of incompatibility. even 1 years later!!!

i am a late late adapter.

which OS? w10 then good luck.

w7, read on...

here's my advice or recommendations -> New PC for video editing; advice sought.

go here-> http://www.cpubenchmark.net/

and

stay away from Intel CPUs with U or M suffixes!

and AMD APUs.

CPU ≥ 8000

GPU ≥ 5000 w ≥2GB vRam

RAM - ≥ 16GB @2400MHz

SSD - ≥ Samsung V-NAND 850 EVO 500GB

NVMe M.2 - ≥ Intel 600P 512GB or Samsung V-NAND 850 EVO M.2 500GB

HDD - ≥1TB WD Black SATA III 7200RPM or RE4 64MB cache 7200RPM

PowerDirector favors Intel CPU

amd cpus does not utilize the full memory bandwidth or whatever.

PowerDirector favors nVidia GPU

however, today's new gpus like 10 series it isn't...

if you have copy of w10 and w7, then i would dual boot!!!

good luck. you need it.

Hi,

Thanks! Forums are a great sours of information!

Budget? Well, I'm placing me somewhere between $2000-$3000. The higher number if I replace more parts and the lower number if I stick to either GPU or CPU with a new motherboard. I intend to build for the "future" (it should last at least 5 years without any major upgrades). I guess I'm a bit of an early adopter. Usually, I aim for the "second newest" but not always.

I've been looking at Intel i7 gen 7 (socket 2066, 8-core, but I've not ruled out the Intel i9 yet. I would like it to drop in price a bit). Neither of them supports Win 7, so Win 7 is not an option for me.

The motherboards I've been looking at is capable of 128 GB RAM...I think I'll start a bit lower down for the moment. Minimum 32 GB if I go for this upgrade option.

These three parts (CPU, MB and RAM) will use my budget for sure.

The other option is to invest more money in a better GPU than the one I have and stick with my old i7 and possibly upgrade my RAM to maximum 24 GB. A bigger GPU with additional memory (I have to replace the ones I have if I'm going for 24 GB, since I then need 6x4GB units and today I have 2GB:s)

However, it feels a bit like a short term solution...On the other hand, I'm not entirely sure that replacing CPU and RAM will be the best solution either since the GPU is (compared) slow. I suspecting a possible bottleneck here.

HDD-wise, I'm already running a Samsung SSD:s 500 GB accompanied by a pure 2TB standard HDD storage unit (not involved in PD:s work or operation system).

Any thoughts?

PD uses up to 8GB RAM. 16GB is enough.

8GB...then my current 12 sho9uld do the work. But the program still crashes when I try to render a, what I think is, a bigger project (2-2,5h Bluray project burning to image on my SSD. Rendering time usually around 13h). So where is the bottleneck? Does PD prioritize using the 4 GB on my GPU and never utilize the 12 GB RAM? For some reason it keeps on crashing.

your cpu.

if you went to cpu benchmark.net, then you'll know your cpu's score which is

a lot less than my recommendations.

you're crashing due to heat(???)

my 6 years old dell xps l702x is faster than yours and she doesn't crash. she just runs hot!

PD uses <1GB vRam.

it's time to post your DxDiag.txt.

i forgot to tell you to uncheck HA whenever you're producing DvD or Blu-ray.

to make you jealous,

i've produced 1hr 59min(32 seperate videos with 2sec cross fades, 5 titles and one PIP) 1080 24p Blu-ray disc

in 3hrs 25min 33secs using my 6 years old dell xps.

13hrs is way too long...

Checking the stats on my current processor sliped my mind. I focused on checking an eventual future one. Yup, my CPU is too slow.

I'm not using HA, but thanks for the tip. It's a tempting name on that one.

And yup - jealous...It's always so "fun" to leave the computer to work for 13h only to find out that it stoped working at 80% after about 11h...on my 7 years old computer. It's time for a new one!

Thanks PepsiMan

Is this PC configuration appropriate?

MB: Gigabyte GA-Z170N-WIFI ou GA-Z270N-WIFI
CPU: Core i7-6700K ou Core i7-7700K (Or one of the two without the "K" ie without overclocking option).
CPU Cooler: Corsair H60 (Water)
RAM: Crucial Ballistix Sport LT (32GB) (2x16GB) DDR4 2400 MT/s (PC4-19200)
SSD: Samsung 850 EVO 500GB
GRAPHICS CARD: EVGA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti GAMING, 4GB GDDR5 or EVGA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti SC GAMING, 4GB GDDR5.
Monitor, HD, PSU and Case, I already have.

holy smokes, batman! now you're smoking. i'd get the one with 'K' and i7-7700K because prices about same,

i7-6700K still operates with w7 or wX but i7-7700K is wX cpu. i7-7700K will not work with w7!
