HELP!

I'm using PD6 on a spanking newVista PC.

I started working on my first project and put some photos, music and titles on the workspace with no problem, but every time I add a video segment to it, PD6 crashes and has to close.

When I search the internet for an answer, I get a message saying that Cyberlink has no solution to the problem.

A video-editing package which won't let me edit video is not much good to me!

Can anyone offer any tips or solutions?

I installed the patch for PD6 last night, and it made no difference.

My PC is less than a month old, and is up to date with Vista.

Every time I try to place video footage on my workspace, PD6 closes.

If only there was one-to-one help available (non-premium rate!).

Check for a video driver update. A PC being only a month old, means it's probably got drivers that are 2 or 3 versions out of date.

Also the manufacturer's drivers that are usually pre-installed aren't as good as the official ATi/Nvidia drivers.

My system running Vista64 ran PD7 a little sluggishly with Forceware 177.98, but wouldn't run at all with 180.42. Now it runs very well with Forceware 181.22.

Thanks very much for that David, I'll give it a try.

This seems a silly question, but what's the best way to update my drivers? Do I it via Control Panel, System and Device Manager?

No, you should get them direct from the GPU maker. For example, if you have a graphics card from Saphire, Asus, HIS, BFG, XFX, ignore those and go straight to either Ati or Nvidia.

Download the latest driver for you card, i.e Radeon HD3800, or Geforce 8600, and your operating system. Note there are different drivers for 32bit and 64bit systems. The download should be a complete installer package.

If you have on-board graphics, then you might need to get the latest chipset drivers. These will be either from Intel or Nvidia.

Downloading the file and installing would be quick and easy instead using device manager. I always download the file, save it in my backup and then install the drivers.

Device manager will only detect WHQ (microsoft approved and lab-tested drivers) which lag being the current drivers by sometimes as much as a year.

That's really not the best option for video drivers, many which are updated monthly, and you simply have to get them from the graphics card manufacturer. Win8 64-bit Pro Retail

I've tried Device Manager and it says my drivers are up to date.

Where would I find out what video or graphics card I have? God I feel dumb asking that question!

Cyberlink have got back to me too with some sugestions. I've emptied my temp folder and recycle bin, and am currently defragging my D Drive using Auslogics Defrag - to be fair it was quite badly fragmented (3297 files!).

But I appreciate everybody's advice and help so far, so please keep it coming! Kind regards,

You're spot on about the WHQ drivers. However as I already posted, it's best NOT to get drivers from the card manufacturer. You should get them direct from the GPU manufacturer.

Chris - The best way to get accurate info on your video card and driver is to use a program called GPU-Z. Simply google it to find a download.

Also, you can just run DXDIAG from the command line (Start, Run) and that will also display detailed info about your video card once you click on the Display tab.

I've updated my drivers on the ATI website. I've increased my virtual memory as advised by Cyberlink, defragged my drives and emptied my temp files.

Still the program crashes when I drag a video clip onto the timeline.

Cyberlink advised me to uninstall and reinstall PD6 but I downloaded the software originally and there's no uninstall icon!

They then want me to use a clean-up tool from Microsoft.

Is Vista the problem? I've been using Vista for a month or so and am not impressed with it generally. Would I be better going back to XP? Kind regards,

Chris Rule-Mullen
