Work arounds aside, it's still really a problem with the DVD player itself.
There's this Philips DVD player at Walmart for $54 (

-HDMI
-1080P upscaling
-Progressive Scanning
-Divx Ultra
-Plays anything, no compatability problems

Front USB Port
You can drop a Video folder (VIDEO_TS) on a thumb drive and stick it in that front USB port and and play it like the real DVD. I can't tell you how handy it is to field test a new video on the TV without having to burn a disk first.
The only drawback to the unit is it takes it a very long time to start playing a disk or to eject a disk. I have no idea why. To me it's not a major deal though.
