Render Preview Quirk #2

Using an MP4 clip on the timeline if the following sequence is used to render a preview PD15 does nothing and exits the render process:

  1. Mute audio track

  2. Split clip into two segments

  3. Apply a default stabilizer to the second segment

  4. Select a range within the second segment to preview render

The fix is to NOT mute the audio for a preview render.

ADDENDUM: Another issues has arisen related to Render Preview - When producing the clip where the preview render was selected the production (with SVRT) takes much longer and PD seems to re-render the sections previewed. Anyone care to test it out ?

Sorry HDedit -

I can't replicate that quirk at all, on both the 2026 build & the 2302 beta build.

Repeated the process with a range of clips & produce profiles, but all worked successfully. Muting the clip or not made no difference here.

I wonder what's going on?

Cheers - Tony

HDedit,

I see what you indicate, looks like something CL should have a look at. For me, no need to split or stabilize, just mute audio as you noted causes the issue. Unmute, all is fine.

Thanks Jeff. I was beginning to wonder why such a quirk.

You are correct ! I can verify what you just did. It's no longer a quirk. It's a bug.

Quote Thanks Jeff. I was beginning to wonder why such a quirk.

Not sure why. Decoupling audio from video does not help either. For me it looks like at least PD10,11,12,13,14,15 all affected (WIN7/10) so I guess it's been around awhile. All listed versions behave the same for me, your unmute the audio does the trick and things work fine.

Guys -

I must be doing something wrong... are we talking about Produce Range?

No, "Render Preview", the one to left of "Produce Range".

Hi Guys,

I can reproduce this now. Passed it on to CyberLink CS and QA.

Cheers

Thanks Jeff - I was barking up the wrong tree.

BUT, I kid you not, when I replicate HDedit's steps exactly and select "Render Preview" PDR15 goes through its rendering process & deposits a series of .mpg files in Output folder > Preview Cache Files. Just tested both 2026 & 2302 builds.

Screenshot attached - during & after rendering.

Beats me! Tony

Tony,

Just details, you muted the clip via timeline disable audio check. Yes, that works, mute clip via right mouse click on timeline and "Mute Clip". Yes, appears to be one of the same controls, but different.

Jeff -

You're so observant... but I actually did mute the track by right clicking > Mute Track. When I did that, the checkbox became unchecked. In fact, I muted the track both ways in separate tests with no impact on the outcome.

I'll do a screen capture, though I'm beginning to feel like I'm getting further out along a very lonely branch.

Tony,
Must simply be your special accolades. I don't have a right click > "Mute Track". I only have a "Mute Clip" feature for a right mouse click. I don't see how the timeline disable/enable audio check mark can activate the contextual menu "Mute Clip" with a check. One applies to a clip, the other a track.

I think since 3 have replicated the "Render Preview" bug with "Mute Clip", CS should be able to repeat and/or resolve.

Jeff

Jeff, HDedit & PowerDirector Moderator -

Of course, if it can be replicated on your setups, it's an issue. I just can't work out why it's not happening here.

Jeff - that right click > "Mute Track" is only available by clicking in a blank track segment (not on the clip).

Here's a screen capture showing what's happening here:

... and no Jeff - I'm not laden with alcohol, which I guess is what you meant by "accolades" ""laughing""

Tony,
I saw noplace in the video demo that you right clicked on the clip and did "Mute Clip". Everything I saw unless I missed it was related to "Mute Track" which does not have the "Render Preview" issue.

See if the attached helps replicate.

Quote: 1. Mute audio track

3. Apply a default stabilizer to the second segment
4. Select a range within the second segment to preview render

Well - at least I can come in off that lonely limb now. There was I thinking that when HDedit said "track", he meant "track".

OK, now that's cleared up I can confirm the issue.

The fix is to NOT mute the audio for a preview render.

I can reproduce the quirk:
Used your Capture_22.wmv as sample clip.

Test A: not ok
-1. Fresh start of PD15, Drag clip into media pane
0.Drag clip into timeline track 1
1.Mute audio track:
>>> "muted the clip via right click on the clip
and did "Mute Clip". " <<< ---
-> Another right click on clip shows "Mute Clip" is checked.
-> I conclude "Mute Clip" is in effect!
-> Though, timeline track audio check mark is still checked as ON!
2.Split clip into two segments
3.Apply a default stabilizer to the second segment
4.Select a range within the second segment to preview render
4.1 Highlight second segment
4.2 select the range
4.3 >>> click "Render Preview" on tool bar above timeline
-> pops up: "The video preview is rendering..."
-> vanishes in < 1 second !!!
-> ??? NOOP ???
-> NO rendered preview! No green preview mark above preview range!
-> Quirk/Error ???

Test B: ok
-1. Restart PD15, Drag clip into media pane
0.Drag clip into timeline track 1
1.Mute audio track:
>>> "muted the clip via timeline disable audio check" <<< ---
-> Timeline track audio check mark is not checked
-> Thus, audio of complete track is OFF.
2.Split clip into two segments
3.Apply a default stabilizer to the second segment
4.Select a range within the second segment to preview render
4.1 Highlight second segment
4.2 select the range
4.3 >>> click "Render Preview" on tool bar above timeline
-> pops up: "The video preview is rendering..." and stays on.
->-> pops up at right side: "rendering..." and stays a while
->->-> 1st part of the selected range becomes marked GREEN above time line
->-> pops up at right side: "rendering..." and stays a while
->->-> next part of the selected range becomes marked GREEN above time line
->->>> "Render Preview" vanishes and
->->>> full selected range is marked GREEN as preview rendered.
-> ok
