I have got Trial version of PowerDVD 16, so maybe it's limited for 3D playback.

As for refresh rate, I have got such information in my TV, what is the current resolution and refresh rate. The same files played with free applications like MPC-HC + LAV Filters + madVR has not got such problems.

SUP files with the same name as MKV file in the same folder aren't working with PowerDVD 16 Trial version, maybe in Full version?

I have also noticed, that when playing MKV files they stutter every 10 seconds, only Blu-Ray movies from folder and ISO aren't stutter. And this is not a problem with MKV files, because the same MKV, when using MPC-HC + LAV Filters + madVR are working very smooth in 1080p24 without any stutter and problems at all.

At the moment this Trial version of PowerDVD 16 for 70 Euro isn't convince me to buy, sorry. I would expect, that PowerDVD 16 will have advantages over free applications like MPC-HC + LAV Filters + madVR, but at the moment it hasn't.

So I think I will stay a little bit longer with my MPC-HC + LAV Filters + madVR.

PS. I have encoded my .mkv x264 to x265, very nice end effect, c.a. 80% smaller file size and I cannot see the difference in quality watching from 2.5 m from my couch. My source was my Blu-Ray movie "AVPR: Aliens vs Predator - Requiem". I have created .mkv 1:1 copy by MakeMKV and then with HandBreak I have encoded it to HEVC x265. So my .mkv 1:1 is 19.4GB (1920x1080 video without quality loss + audio HD), after x265 file is 4.4GB. I will test it with PowerDVD 16 Trial version, how it's played. I have just used Medium Preset with RF 20 via HandBreak. I think that Slow or Very Slow Preset will create even smaller file and RF 20 is enough for picture quality.

The file playback rate is specified by industry standards. So It's branded in your source material. The software will check it, and give it back in the write rate. Why do you want to change it manualy?

When playing a BluRay disc, PDVD will change the screen refresh rate to the appropriate rate; it does NOT, however, change the video display rate for FILE based videos, like .mkv, avi etc.

On my side, both "formats" (Bluray and file based videos(mkv,avi..)) are properly played by powerdvd.

Does your display (tv, monitor) change its rate from say 60hz to 23.976?

You can handle this under Adapter properties. But you don't have to.
The file playback rate is in the source material.
If it is 1080p24 so PDVD will play it back in 1080p24.
If it's a 1080p60, so PDVD will give it back in 1080p60.
You will even not see in witch format it is played back.

I'd like to see a little clip of this if it's possible. Please capture some, and share it her, to more understand the issue.

Unless something has changed recently, no it does not change the dispaly rate - FOR FILE BASED VIDEOS.

I don't know how I can be more clear. You are obviously not familiar enough with the software you are trying to support. PDVD DOES NOT automatically adjust the video refresh rate for file based video - you even acknowledged this fact in a recent thread. It is the primary reason most people use a free player (MPC etc) for most videos; just about every other player out there handles this important feature - except PDVD.

The first image shows a video with a rate of 23.9762 playing at 60hz, the player did NOT change the rate to 24 - it never does, the second video played with MPC shows the correct rate.


I would encourage you to become a little more familiar with the software you're trying to support.

Also know that most of the hardware will have to be Playready 3.0 enabled, which means that your GTX 1070 should be OK, but not your processor. This is Microsoft's doing.

You need a Kaby Lake processor for that with on board 630 graphics even if you do use your NVIDIA card; so I've read.

For any one else reading this, I just got an anser back from AMD, and they said "they don't if thier cards are Playready 3.0 enabled or when that will happen".

Very frustrating when even the company making GPU's don't even know the answer.

If you're interested in UHD Blu-ray playback, I would wait until the release of version 17 and generally new versions are released in the spring. However given the circumstances that you will have to upgrade your MoBo and processor, it may be more practicle to get a stand-alone UHD-Blu-ray player.
