My operating system is a dell 15 7559 laptop, 256gb ssd, 16gb ram, Nvidea gtx 960m 4gb graphics card. When I import a photo, then add another photo as a layer then start removing some of the top layer with the brush, the system crashes after a short while editing.

Is this caused by limitations in my laptop ?

Hello NomadicBroos,

Welcome to the PhotoDirector forum laughing

I certainly don't think that your laptop's specifications are the cause of the issue you're experiencing. I've edited multiple photos in the Layers module on a much less powerful PC, brushing out sections of different layers.

If you look at the minimum specifications recommended for PhD, you'll see that your PC is more than capable.

Have you experienced the crashing repeatedly, or working with particular images? What are the properties (file type, resolution) of the photos you're using in the Layers module?

Hello Pix, I'm working with raw files and j pegs, 6MB files. I start to edit the layer with the brush and watch the physical memory on the performance monitor go up and up until the whole computer crashes.

It crashes no matter what photos I use but only when I'm in the layers editing part.

Hello again,

That's a very concerning problem & may indicate some flaws in your OS. I'm afraid I don't have the technical expertise to help you track those down.

Just now, I ran Resource Monitor whilst working with Layers using 2 RAW files from Panasonic ZS50 & Sony A6000. There were spikes in CPU activity, but nothing alarming & certainly didn't result in any issues. I've attached a screenshot.

The first thing I'd suggest is to carry out any system checks or maintenance on your PC, & ensure that all drivers are up-to-date.

mine has also started crashing when working layers . . . spinning wheel at bottom just says Loading or Saving dependant on where I'm at in the Layer work.

Just started doing this recently. Any ideas?

Hello DECinHSV,

I'm afraid I cannot offer any clues about why it's happening, nor why it started do that recently.

I've run repeated tests, pushing the layers module to its limits, and it's never stalled or crashed.

Just now I had 7 layers - each photo/graphic was in the 20+MP range - each with opacity & colour adjustments applied. I was monitoring CPU & GPU activity at the same time. Even the spikes during "extreme" colour adjustment didn't result in anything like a stall or crash.

Are you choosing "Save As" or "Export"? Does it make any difference which one you select?

Pix - thx for the reply. I normally export and do not recall if the SAVE AS has the same issue, so I'll try that - thx for the tip!

I never had any issues until lately, so I wonder if its a compatibility issue with WIN10 push or possibly some other driver? I dont recall receiving any updates to PD7.

Kind regards
