Cannot import YoCam MP4 files into PowerDirector

Hello there.

This is just a heads-up to anybody thinking of using a YoCam. The raw files won't open in PowerDirector v.14 Ultimate (14.0.2707)- at least, not in my copy.

The error I get is:

Attached is the MediaInfo data file if anybody wants to figure out why...:

I have to convert the files (using WinX Converter) before I can edit the suckers. I have advised YouCam but have had no reply.

Cheers.

1) Do you have quicktime on your computer?

2) Please take a 3 to 5 second video of anyhting and post it here as an attachment, Original format of course.

3) Is it a YoCam or YouCam (program by Cyberlink) ? ? wink .

Aah!.. good point. I removed Quicktime recently as a security measure.

OK... no time now, but after work I'll do that for you.

Definitely YoCam. Kickstarter thingy - www.mofily.com - (so far, quite disappointing in audio and video quality, by the way.

Thanks for your interestd!

Please see attached. Thanks.

I temporarily re-installed Quicktime as a test. Here are the results;

1) When importing the Yocam mp4:

2) when clip is moved to the timeline:

Hi Wreckage in Brisbane -

I think I got pretty much what you got.

Without QT, your video imported OK, but I got the error when I tried to playback... attached

Reinstalled QT - it played through then the same error message popped up.

You may have to adjust yourself to conversion prior to import, I think.

Cheers - Tony from down here.

Er - revised observation...

Now - with NO QuickTime installed - the YoCam clip plays through in the timeline, with the same error message as before. PDR was unable to produce - error attached.

After conversion with Handbrake, it imports & plays back in PDR without issue. Lens correction worked OK with one of the Panasonic standard lens profiles. Produced without a problem.

Dan - I'd be happy to put the clothes away, but they're not mine! laughing

Steve - "this is a..." (mysterious statement). Also, how did you determine that the clip has 4-bit audio? Is it ADPCM?

I'd like to know what Steve intended there, too.. ;

Thanks for all your input, people. It seems (as usual) there are differing results from different computers but all in all, it's a big disappointment for me having bought what was advertised as a fairly top-line cam only to find out it's inferior in almost all ways.

I don't think these faults can be fixed by firmware so I may have to get rid of the thing. Does anybody have any recommendations on a mid-range 'action cam'? I have a GoPro +LCD and I was hoping the YoCam would compliment it but the quality seems too far away. Much like warm beer, this is just another of life's little disappointments. ;

I may have misread the bit rate - it is now 16 whichc is OK. Windows and VLC player now both agree.

The strange line is an almost quote from the video showing that I was able to play it and listen after conversion.

I used "Any Video Converter" for the conversion and was able to use the video in Power Director.

I have but don't like the "ION" action camera. I have a pair of action camera sunglasses that I like as long as I remember to keep my head mostly still.

I also like my beer almost room temperature -- so what do I know? The best beer I tasted lately was a chocolate stout -with nitro at a just opened local brewery. .

Hi Steve -

I see. I thought you may have meant 4-bit, as in bit depth. You meant bit rate.

You're right to point to the audio as the source of the problem, since the error message states "Audio Cut". Here, even though the video plays back in PDR, there's no audio before conversion despite the presence of a waveform.

From a bit of digging around, it seems that ADPCM is compressed into 4-bit data. I downloaded some 4-bit ADPCM audio samples from this website and they all playback perfectly in PDR, so it must be something in particular about the audio on the YoCam clip.

Cheers - Tony

I don't know if it's helpful to you or not, but I just discovered if you edit the YoCam audio in AudioDirector (provided you have that), then PowerDirector can recognize the edited audio. Which may or may not be less trouble than pre-conversion.

Hello there. Yes, this is helpful, but I don't understand what you mean by 'edit'. I've tried importing the YoCam movie into PowerDirector then sending it to AudioDirector, but that still didn't work.

I tried opening the actual YoCam mp4 with AudioDirector, but what do I do then? It wants to save it as a project or an audio file.

If you could provide some more details of how/what you did, I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks.

Hi GoddessDix & Wreckage -

Here - whether I import the YoCam clip into ADR directly or send it to ADR via PDR, I get the same error message...

In any case, it would be effectively "converting" the original clip. Produced to MP4, ADR will convert the audio to AAC format, with which PDR will have no problems.

What I did specifically: I imported a YoCam video in a project, and got the error messages as mentioned regarding the shadow files. Pulling the clip onto the timeline. Then right clicking on the clip to edit audio, in AudioDirectior. If you make a change in the audio while in AudioDirectior, even something very minor, just something that changes the sound, and then use the "Back" to pull the edited audio back into PowerDirector, you'll have access to the audio then without the error messages. Or at least, that was my experience the few times I did it.

Although frankly, I've taken to batch re-encoding the YoCam beforehand so I don't have to putz with it. If I had a single YoCam clip to edit, that's one thing but a bunch of clips? Much easier to re-encode first.

I was hoping PowerDirector would be able to manage it out of the gate, though. I understand from the YoCam FAQs they're working on sound compatibility because Windows default players don't see the sound either unless you install codecs. So maybe, eventually, it will be a non-issue? One can hope.

Oh and another quirk I noticed? When you pull the audio back into PD, if you link the audio and video, you can't do Power Tools effects on it. The audio has to be unlinked to do the action cam lens corrections and such. Then you can link it back.

I've turned Shadow Files off. I read somewhere that it makes Producing faster anyway.

use the "Back" to pull the edited audio back into PowerDirector

How embarrassment... I didn't know about the 'Back' button. That really does save a lot of faffing about, doesn't it?

:

I saved the edited audio as an audio file, imported it back to PowerDirector, split the original and deleted its audio, then pasted the edited audio back to the video. And I thought that was what you must heave meant. It seemed easy to me, anyway. ;

Thanks for teaching me about the 'Back' button. Everything is inevitable

I'm glad you've got a way around the issue with your YoCam clips. Here - I can't even get the thing to go to ADR, let alone edit it.

No matter - it's not my YoCam laughing
