Uninstall Quicktime?

Hi Nina -

Yes & yes. I'd say the latter is the more likely... and it's already been happening for some time (I've learned).

Examples: SonicFire Pro - up till Version 4 - relied on Quicktime to function at all. Since version 5 it doesn't. iTunes used to require QT - now it doesn't (for audio or video).

I think similar things have been happening with web based media players that once relied on QT.

Appalling behaviour by Apple & there'll, no doubt, be consequences.

Cheers - Tony

I just got off the phone with a sales 'guy' at GoPro and he said they are aware of the issue and he was aware that it was announced yesterday - about the QT not being supported anymore for security updates for the WIN operating platforms.

He said GoPro will have to figure something out as far as how they want to handle this as GP Studio needs to use QT at the moment.

Nothing really new as I think you stated this Tony - but I concur - and it came from someone right at GoPro.

So.... how best to uninstall QT??? Can I just go to my add/remove programs in WIN 8.1 or does QT have a special uninstaller? I do not see one listed with the rest of the programs listed in my programs and features list in WIN 8.1.

thanks,

CS

Hi CS -

I used Revo Uninstaller (there were 4 items left after regular uninstall). Uninstalling via Control Panel > Programs might well be enough.

Not sure if you're prepared to trust this link but https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT205771 (funny - last updated 9 March 2016)

I've made a 'restore' point labeled 'b4 QT uninstall' so I think I'll be alright and be able to restore to that point if I find something that I can't live without - with QT removed - will just restore to that restore point if needed.

Thanks Tony.

Your concern for others' circumstances is staggering! undecided

Aside from SmartSound, PDR will run happily (as far as I've determined since uninstalling it earlier)... but some Windows software requires QuickTime to even function correctly!

I can see some potential litigation here. Millions of users of various bits of Windows based software will be left stranded. Microsoft appears to have remained faily quiet on the issue too.

Tony!

Since when does a simple explanation of how I use my computer become an example of "Don't give a damn about anyone else" attitude? All I did in my post was explain that I use my internet service for a short period each day, unlike some who might probably be "hooked up" 24 hours/7 days. When I go off-line, then I'm truly off-line! Not just logged off, but, for the sake of my computer's security, completely disconnected.

As to the problem of curtailed support for QuickTime, there may well be quite a legal battle in the courts, and several organisations may well be bound up in the arguments, not least of which being Cyberlink, as several of their software products rely on QuickTime in one way or another to function properly. And yes, Microsoft WILL have to step up to the plate here as well. I think their own "Windows Movie Maker" may also tap into SmartSound(though I could be wrong there) but in any case, Microsoft will have an interest in these goings-on.

Just an observation, Neil.

Consequence #2 in PDR

Without QuickTime installed, you cannot import alpha channel videos. Full stop.

Confirmed by reinstalling QT - same video imported fine.

Others may not be bothered by this because they have no use for alpha channel videos... BUT it puts a bit of a dint in PDR's capabilities.

Here's what I found on an Italian website.

The risk is damage, loss or alteration of data and system resources on your computer. On the basis of Trend Micro's report, which had recently unearthed two existing flaws in QuickTime code for Windows, the DHS (Department of Homeland Security) has urged Windows users to solve the problem at its root, by uninstalling the program. This is despite have not yet registered attacks of any kind, but being the real threat is preferred to prevent rather than be then forced to cure.

To advise the removal of the software is also the Computer Emergency Readiness Team of the US government. On the other hand, it is a fact that today, in Windows, not lack perfectly free alternatives can not regret the player Apple. Tony,

consequence #2 is a pain. Also, you can not produce to alpha (in programs which offer that).I don't use alpha often, but it's highly appreciated to have the possibility- and I do use it.Uninstalled last night.....fear I will have to install it again......

Install it when you need it - uninstall when not......

Nina,

Your suggestion is probably the best approach for now.
When you need alpha, disconnect from net and install QT. When done, uninstall QT and reconnect to internet.

As for lawsuits towards Apple or Microsoft for a piece of free software... that's ridiculous.
Now, Cyberlink relies on numerous pieces of free software - QT is just one of them. MKV splitter, 7zip, encodig blocks from nvidia, amd and intel... If the PD advertised functionality breaks because of one of those components I am not sure what legal implications are. Probably their EULA states that they have no liability for those pieces and if we use their software we agree not to complain about that

But I'm not sure, don't fell like researching, I personally said multiple times that I don't need any Apple garbage on my PC and I just avoid any MOV files.

SoNic - Tony - so one does not have to be connected to the net to install QT then? - and for it to run.. for the short time that one would use it before removing it from the computer... then connecting to the internet safely. I've dld the exe file and have it in a folder ready for install when needed but will operate the computer, as a matter of practice, with QT removed from now on.

Why I'm asking .. Ive seen further intrusion, and I'm sure you have too, when someone has dld and installed - the registration questions and other superfluous stuff - just to use it in PD ... we can get away without registering it I'm guessing?

Okay, Tony!

That's enough for me! QuickTime stays put on my computer! Just out of curiosity, Alpha Channel, Is that TS content from a set-top PVR device by any chance? I ask because I've imported a lot of content from a flash-drive, normally connected to a PVR(shows from ABC, like "Four Corners" or "Julia Zemiro's Home Delivery" series).

Cheers!
