PD14 Crashes - Display Adapter stops working / Application cannot access GPU errors

Having a hell of a time with PD14 and my new laptop... Everything went better with PD11 and my old Core i3 desktop!

I can barely even start a project, as soon as I add a simple effect like black/white, get an error popping up saying my computers display adapter has stopped working(which just keeps coming up over and over until PD14 crashes), and every now and then it will pop up with 'application cannot access GPU' and crashes...

Any ideas?

Hi booger182,
I haven't seen those messages before.....

What you need to give us is the following please. Part A & B info. Guides: http://forum.cyberlink.com/forum/posts/list/45453.page

If you're still using the i3 with PDR14... you are going to struggle editing HD video or adding anything. my initial guess is you're laptop hasn't been updated and the GPU drivers are old and the GPU is using shared resources or you haven't allocated PDR14 to use the graphics card. The diagnostic will tell members more.

How does one "allocate PD14 to use a graphics card"? By checking enable hardware acceleration in Preferences? Regards,

If it is a Nvidia card, you have to call up the Nvidia Control Panel, 3D Settings>Program Settings
1. Select PowerDirector
2. Select the Nvidia GPU rather than the Integrated GPU

I hope that helps clarify what I wrote to the OP and to Richmond Dan.

I have tryed to fix this in many ways, but there is just no way of getting my Powerdirector to use my Nvidia card.

Kind of a pain, as I purchased a New $2500 laptop to assist with better video editing, and I cant even use the GPU.

See attached, only option is to use the intergrated card...

You should follow the step gives by daffydd on another post. I'm sure it will work.

The issue is actually the restriction of the software NVIDIA Control Panel but not PowerDirector issue. We (CyberLink) made a workaround to avoid the restriction but there might be side effect of issues.

It is suggested that you back up the original modules before they are replaced by the provided workaround module.

For Intel/NVIDIA hybrid GPU platforms, there is a mechanism in the NVIDIA Control Panel to manage which third party software is allowed to use dGPU. The mechanism is managed by NVIDIA, not by CyberLink. CyberLink PowerDirector supports NVIDIA GPU, based on NVIDIA's specification, when there is no restriction. There is a workaround solution to let this kind of hybrid platform use the dGPU, but results in side effects for specific platform with specific VGA drivers. The resulting side effect is the preview window becomes a black screen during previewing when hardware decoding is enabled. The issue cannot be resolved from the software side.

To implement the workaround, please follow the steps below:

1. Go to PowerDirector installation folder. Find the 2 files "PDR.exe" and "PDR.exe.manifest" and rename them to
"PDR14.exe" and "PDR14.exe.manifest".
2. Download the file "GpuUtility.dll" and copy the file to the path C:\Program Files\CyberLink\PowerDirector14\CESdlls\
32bit: http://download.cyberlink.com/ftpdload/cs/tool/GpuUtility/32bit/GpuUtility.dll
64bit: http://download.cyberlink.com/ftpdload/cs/tool/GpuUtility/64bit/GpuUtility.dll
3. Download the files "GpuUtilityEx_ENABLE_VGA.exe" and "GpuUtilityEx_ENABLE_VGA.exe.manifest" and copy the
files to the path C:\Program Files\CyberLink\PowerDirector14
[GpuUtilityEx_ENABLE_VGA.exe]
32bit: http://download.cyberlink.com/ftpdload/cs/tool/Gpu...it/GpuUtilityEx_ENABLE_VGA.exe
64bit: http://download.cyberlink.com/ftpdload/cs/tool/Gpu...it/GpuUtilityEx_ENABLE_VGA.exe
[GpuUtilityEx_ENABLE_VGA.exe.manifest]
32bit: http://download.cyberlink.com/ftpdload/cs/tool/Gpu...lityEx_ENABLE_VGA.exe.manifest
64bit: http://download.cyberlink.com/ftpdload/cs/tool/Gpu...lityEx_ENABLE_VGA.exe.manifest
4. Reboot your computer.
5. After rebooting, right click on PDR14.exe and choose the option to run the software by NVIDIA GPU.

It is suggested that you back up the original modules before they are replaced by the provided workaround module.

Strange, I don't even have the option of choosing which graphics processor to use:

If you do not follow the steps from my previous post, you don't have this option.

The goal of the steps is to active this option.

Richmand Dan has a desktop (signature), following these steps will not enable laptop switchable graphic features. If he wants to switch between his Intel HD4600 and his Nvidia 720 for PD editing he would have to do it manually, i.e. cable switch or HDMI switch box or the like.

I'm not sure what I've done or how I've done it, but I think my desktop is using my NVIDIA GPU. As shown on the two downloads below, my PD recognizes the GPU (as indicated by the NVIDIA/CUDA logo) and the GPU activity indicator shows PDR.exe to be using my GPU. (Why it shows PDR twice I'm not sure, except that I have both PD12 and PD14 installed).

I don't know that I did anything to enable the use of the GPU, which is why I was asking how to do it in the first place...

Nothing, it was in use all the time or you wouldn't have been able to post the NVIDIA Control Panel.JPG earlier. The Nvidia control panel app will not launch on a Desktop if the GPU not in use.

HI Mate,

I guess I can try this again, but tried that, it worked - And I could choose Nvidi GPU, but Power Director would just crash over and over...

And what do you mean by back up original modules??

Be sure to uninstall GeForce Experience. It will reload every time you update an NVIDIA driver. Regards,

Thank you for you confirmation.

If PD14 crashes you can remove Geforce.

So far, you do not need to remove Geforce if you install with last nvidia driver.

When you start PD14 be sure that it use nvidia. Right click on the start icon and select the nvidia card.

Sorry Dan, it has and it will enable laptop switchable graphics features.

80% of complains and troubleshooting on those forums are on gaming laptops with nvidia/intel combos. That made think that probably a lot of CL time is allocated to fix those issues too (both in support and original programing).

Maybe would be fair that laptop users with nvidia/intel combo should pay more than desktop users for this software to compensate for this. Right now everyone else subsidize their convenience.

I would happlily pay extra IF they could get it to work! Because at the moment, my view is that CL is not compatible with my Nvidia 960M card, as I cant use it...

Whether its Nvidia/CL problem, I dont believe that they could be classified as being compatible with each other, if they just dont work, and my GPU cannot be used by PD14.
