Canon xc10 and the MXF format

I am thinking about buying a new camcorder. It is the Canon XC10. It records 4K in a format called MXF. People who edit with Adobe Premiere have difficulty editing with this format. They must transcode MXF to mp4 or other formats that work well with Adobe. Since Adobe is considered professional editing software I am concerned the MXF format will be a problem for PD 14. I am currently using PD 11 and would like to up grade to 14 but I first need to know if it can handle the MXF format.

Has anyone tried editing the MXF format with PD 14?

thanks,

Hi HT -

I haven't tested an MXF file from the Canon XC10, but MXF is not listed in the supported formats - http://www.cyberlink.com/products/powerdirector-ultimate/spec_en_AU.html - so I expect you'd need to convert to MP4 prior to import.

I have just tested an MXF from another camera - no go! I converted it to MP4 & it imports fine. Screen shot attached.

MXF is the wrapper/container. The XC10 uses H.264 compression.

HT -

An update... I found some files directly from a Canon XC10 - https://vimeo.com/147930102 (download original).

Importing into PDR threw up the same error message...

MediaInfo wouldn't even read the file, but some media players attempted to play it.

Converting the ~600MB 20sec clip took little time with Handbrake & it imported fine.

So - if you going to buy one & use PDR to edit, you'll need to adjust to the conversion workflow! laughing

I am concerned about 3 things if I have to convert to mp4.

One is that in the conversion I will loose quality.

The second thing is how to convert efficiently. For example, if I am on vacation and take 100 short clips I would have to convert each clip individually to mp4 to keep them separate for easier selection while editing. If I convert the 100 clips to one big file I would have to split the one long clip into to 100 original clip division before I edit.

The last thing is what program do you recommend for the conversion process?

thanks,

Hi HT -

I'm sailing blind here because I have NO real-life experience with MXF. Any advice I could offer about the "best" conversion process would be of little value.

You're right to be concerned about maintaining quality in the conversion process. The XC10 records UHD 3840 x 2160 at 205/305Mbps, so you'd need to retain that!

The sample I tested from Vimeo was recorded at 305Mbps. My first attempt at Handbrake conversion yielded a file with a VBR of 20Mbps! Whoops - I thought I had the settings right. Maybe someone more experienced with Handbrake will chime in.

There are "dedicated" MXF converters but I've not tried them.

Cheers - Tony

Try using Avidemux to remux mxf to mp4.No transcode.Set video and audio to copy.

Repack from one container format to another is fast because of no transcode.

Sould be plenty of others you could try to remux your files ffmpeg etc

I know I am coming to this thread late. My thoughts are Powerdirector does not support the MXF file format.

There are other 4K cameras that output MP4 file format which Powerdirector does support.

I just saw a post on a Camera that is 4K and outputs in MP4.

Here is one. There are many other 4K cameras that do not use MXF format.
