'Disc type not supported' when trying to burn a DVD

Hi

I am using PowerDirector 13 deluxe to edit some home videos and hopefully burn them to a DVD so that we can watch them on tv. I have managed to edit about 55 minutes worth of video but am struggling to burn it to DVD as when I click on 'start burning' it says that 'this disc type is not supported'.

Here's some information about my computer, the version of powerdirector 13 and the type of DVD to help:

Computer: Windows 8.1, Processor: Intel(R) Pentium(R) CPU 987 @ 1.50GHZ, RAM: 4.00GB, System type: 64-bit operating system

PowerDirector 13 Deluxe 13.0.2104.0 SR number: VDE140707-01

DVD: SONY General version 1.1/2x-speed DVD-RW Revision 1.0

I'm afraid I'm rather clueless when it comes to this kind of thing so I don't know if the above information is useful or if I've missed out something important but any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

How did you obtain this version of PowerDirector ? Click on the Up arrow on the top right of the screen next to the word PowerDirector to check for an update. There are at least 7 updates listed for the retail version. See this link and update it to build 3516 : http://www.cyberlink.com/support/powerdirector-ultra/patches_en_US.html .

Try this: Uncheck Burn to disc and check Create a folder only in the final output window and let us know if you are successful.

Hello, Eriory123!

This might be more a hardware issue relating to the DVD burner itself, rather than Power Director(any version). Regular single-layer DVD blank discs are either DVD+R or DVD-R, and dual-layer discs are either DVD+R DL or DVD-R DL(as they are labeled). Some DVD burning drives may only handle single-layer discs while others may be able to handle both single and dual-layer, then there's that "plus or minus" bit which, to be honest, only throws an unnecessary complication into the mix, and is something never encountered in when burning CDs. Some DVD burning drives are "universal" in that they can use both DVD+R or DVD-R discs, while others may specify the type of disc to be used, either DVD+R or DVD-R, your DVD drive might be one of the latter. The thing to look for is on the tray of the drive itself, If the drive can handle either the + or - discs the two mathematical symbols should appear with + over - and also look for the DL on the tray(fascia) which will tell you if you can use dual-layer discs, also check to see if the symbol, RW on a square with rounded corners appears as well, otherwise the drive may be read-only, not capable of writing(burning) to disc. These are the things to watch for on the drive itself. Generally, these days, computers have the more "universal" types of burning drives(capable of using any type of DVD disc) incorporated into them. You might need to look at the programme, Power Director(your version) to see if it will work with the drive installed in your computer. Tomasc or others might be able to offer more advice there.

Cheers!

Neil.

Thank you very much for your reply. I bought the software from Amazon this week but I have now downloaded the update as you sugggested. I have also followed your other suggestion of unchecking burn to disc and selecting create a folder. This was successful. How do I now get the video on to the DVD?

Hi Neil

Thanks, I've checked and it has the RW symbol in a rounded square and it says DVD+R DL on it too. I've burned to these discs with this laptop before so in theory they shoulld be ok.

What is the size of the folder created? If it is the size that fit a singer layer dvd then that is all you need. In your initial post you said you were using a dvd-rw and now say a dvd+r dl. All you need now is to use a disc burning software. If you don’t have one then get one.

Try this: Download Imgburn (freeware) or Power2Go trial in this link: http://www.cyberlink.com/downloads/trials/index_en_US.html to burn that folder created earlier to a blank dvd.

Other contributors here have given you good information and suggestions to try first.

Let us know if any of the information here fixes your problem.

Hmm, why didn't I think of that? It could be the reason why the "disc type not supported" warning comes up: dirty lens on rewrite drive. Thanks Barry!

Cheers!

Neil.
