Hi Guys

I have finally finished my epic and would like to make a proper Master Copy to Disc. I am not totally conversant with all these different formats. I have already bagged the project up and saved several copies, but, I would like to make a solid master copy onto either a DVD or USB Drive. Could some one please tell me: Which format would give me (a) the best quality file and (b) Be the easiest to use at a later date should I wish to burn more DVDs?

Thanks a bunch.

P.S. Am I the only guy out there who actually loves PD13?

Hello, Pete!

As a guess, I'd assume your "epic" is of about an hour's duration, possibly you could master it to DVD as an MPEG2 HQ(High Quality) DVD, if, your intent is to have professionally-made DVD copies made for resale to the public(in which case, you'll want/need to have a copyright protection applied to it in your name). For me, normally I burn discs at DVD-SP because I want maximum content on a disc, PD14 doesn't allow it(except for 4:3 aspect ratio content), but PD8(no longer available) does, and thanks to good luck, my PD14 installed without my needing to uninstall PD8, so they sit side-by-side on my computer, PD8 filling gaps left by PD14. But then, my DVDs are for private viewing only anyway, and though DVD-SP allows a good image quality for my own purposes, your purpose seems more commercially-oriented, so DVD-HQ would be the way to go.

Cheers!

Neil.

Bluray is higher quality than DVD. I don't have a BR burner so I can't answer specifics.

Keeping a master on USB is risky. If you want something "solid" then make a disc. I keep iso images as masters on my backup HDD. If I need to make more discs, I just use the iso.

BTW: Burning to DVD... you get ONE format. It doesn't matter what format the video is, the DVD will be DVD format.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I think if you Produce to an MPEG-2 file, where you can use custom settings, then import that file into Create Disc rather than importing the project you can burn the disc or to a file with those settings.

Pete : If you want to save a copy from which you can burn further discs and are sure you won't want to do any further editing then I would do as jcardana suggests and burn to an ISO file. You can then use any free third-party app such as imgburn to produce as many discs as you want.

For the best quality on a standard DVD you should use the default MPEG-2 DVD HQ 720x576 (or 720x480 in the US) 8 mbps. This gives about 1 hour of video. If your original footage is HD and you want to save at that quality you'll need to go to Blu-Ray, again burning to an ISO file if you want to make multiple copies. Regards,
Mike

Thank you so much everyone.
I have made several DVDs at the MPEG2 HQ as suggested, so it seems I got that one right. I have now made an an ISO file and copied it to several destinations. I have Toast on my MAC would I be able to use this to burn more DVDs when required.
Once again a big thank you

ok... I do apologize for this but... it must be said.

So, I am assuming that 'Toast' is some sort of DVD burning software - NOT a slice of white or wheat or multi-grained bread that has been burned to a nice brown shade... correct? ( I know I'll 'google' 'Toast' but...).

And since I'm NOT familiar with it - I sure can not answer if it'll do the job for you - but I bet there is someone in here that may be able to answer your question.

I wonder - what is your source material? For myself I start out with videos and still images at a resolution of nothing less than 1920x1080. 'Mastering' to a format less than the original isn't something that I'd want to do and I always create MP4's at either 1920x1080 or 3840x2160.

If someone wants a DVD of something I've got I use the MP4 to create one. That's quick and easy.

I have an external drive on my laptop and an NAS attached to my router and I keep a copy of every produced file on each device.

p.s. - we share an attachement to PD13 by the way. It does everything that I need (at the moment).

There seem to be two toast software for the Mac. Both are for creating DVD's. One Toast from Roxio: http://www.roxio.com/enu/products/toast/titanium/ . Another Toast from Corel: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/toast-burn/id792619118?mt=12 for copying or duplicating discs.

Hi, CS!

You beat me to the punch-line! I was going to use the bread reference as a joke by saying, please make sure the butter or margarine doesn't get into your computer workings! Ha-ha!

Cheers!

Toast is well-known in the Mac community and has been around for years. It was, and is, authored by Roxio which is now part of the Corel Corporation. See here. Regards,
Mike

Once again I cannot thank you enough.
But I have to say I always, and I MEAN ALWAYS have Anchor Butter, even here in France. Nothing else drips so nicely off hot toast. Mine is an oldie by Roxio by the way. However, when I tried to burn from my ISO it would not until it had 'Converted it'?? To I know not what format and the burned DVD did not have either my first video or any of my Menus that are clearly present in the ISO file? I will take the advice from Longedge and produce everything to MP4
Thanks to everyone
