Video Effect preview?

Hi all

I am new to Powerdirector 14, however did use PD11 so am not a complete rookie.

One question I have is to ask if there is a way to preview effects on your video, besides dragging each effect one by one onto your video on the timeline and pressing play?

Is there no way to hover over each effect and watch what that would do to your video, similar to how you get on photo-editing programs?

Not sure if I just cannot work out how to do it, or if it is not possible due the program/system not being able to handle it (although surely a 5 sec preview when you hoverered over an effect should be a possibility?).

Many thanks

Nick

Hi Nick -

I'm afraid what you see is what you get with PDR's FX. By clicking on an effect in the FX module, you'll see an animation of a pinwheel/flower with a representation of the effect applied. There's no facility to hover over an effect to see the impact on your clip.

ColorDirector has that feature, where the effect/adjustment is shown on a thumbnail. Not PDR.

Cheers - Tony

Hi, Nickyb1982!

You can preview an effect without dropping it onto the timeline, for instance, in the PiP objects room you can view the superimpose effects before you add them to your video, just choose any one by clicking on it in the media library and watch how it behaves. If it souts your needs and the "mood" of your video, you simply pull it down onto the Video 2 track. Below that is the Particle room, again, click on the one you think might suit your video and view it whilst it's in the media library, if you like it, pull it onto the video 1 or video 2 track. these are not able to be made transparent, but there is an opacity setting you could attempt to set(I've not been able to get it to work, myself). I admit, I've not yet used any in my videos until I've had a chance to experiment with them. Above these is the effects room, these can also be viewed before inserting on the Effect(fx) track or superimpose directly onto the video clip on Video 1, 2 or other video tracks you can call up. If applied directly onto the video track, it will effect the entire duration of the clip(or highlighted portion) on any of the video tracks, but if inserted on the fx track, will only apply for the length of time you determine, and only apply to the Video 1 timeline. There's quite a bit of experimentation ahead for both of us, it seems. There are a lot of things I'm still learning about in PD14, but what I've told you here, is knowledge I've gained from experimentation done for the purpose of writing this post.

Cheers!

Neil.

Thanks for the replies!

It's a bit disappointing that, although you can see how the effect behaves as just as effect, you cannot preview how it would interact with your video. Just a 5 second preview would do...

Hi, Nicky!

I have to agree with Tony on this one, it's the "nature of the beast" so-to-speak. If you have content on your timeline you can see how the fx room content will affect your video, just drop a chosen effect onto the fx track immediately below the video track(assuming you're using Video Track 1). This is a sort-of "suck it and see" approach, delete the effect from the fx track if you don't like it.

Cheers!

I guess I'll just have to use the drag onto the timeline method, no matter how arduous!

Hopefully it'll be a feature in the future.

Cheers!
