General question about editing

I am new to editing but really want to learn. I'm sure my ignorance is going to shine through here and if this is wrong forum to ask, I apologize.

First I'm using PD13.

I'm editing videos originally recorded in avchd and MP4.

..If I import a few clips into PD13, complete my editing, then go to produce and keep the same parameters the clips were filmed originally (ie MP4, 1920x1080, 30p etc), will I technically be losing quality of the video. I've always read that any time you edit then reproduce a clip, even if left in the same format, you lose quality or frames or whatever. Something about the trade off of the digital age versus the old way with tape,etc.

Again, I apologize for my novice with terms and hopefully this makes sense what I'm asking.

Hello, ChristianW!

Welcome to the Forum! Whether using PD13, 14 or any version of Power Director which handles AVCHD or MP4 shouldn't matter(I think PD8 was the first version with AVCHD and MP4 capabilities). You shouldn't loose much image quality if you're only producing once, that is, you've edited all your clips together, put in any transitions, titles, music and/or narration(possibly, up to you if you did or not), then rendered(produced) this as a finished product, there should be no noticable loss in image quality at all. Just a note though, depending on how powerful your computer is, rendering in AVCHD can take ages to complete, you'll need plenty of patience!

Hi Christian,

If you produce in exactly the same format as the original material you should be able to use SVRT -Smart Video Rendering Technology. The idea of this is that any unaltered original footage is simply passed through without re-rendering. The only parts that are rendered are those where effects have been applied such as transitions and titles etc. As well as being faster it also means there is no loss of quality in the un-rendered areas.

If the format is suitable for SVRT the checkbox will be available, if not it will be greyed out.
