I have a SOny DCR TRV18E camcorder but windows 7 will not recognise it (or PD14)

It will recognise the memory card (which is only for stills)

Is there any way I can get this into PD14?

Hi Bunkerbaz -

This page might help - https://www.sony.co.uk/support/en/content/cnt-hn/prd-dime/how-to-transfer-dv-or-digital8-videos-to-your-pc/DCR-TRV18E

It seems like it's a Win 7 driver issue. The Sony support page explains how to fix.

Cheers - Tony

It seems that website advice requires an ieee.1394 input something I had three PC's ago. This camcorder has a USB output but my efforts have been fruitless. The Sony "PLay memories Home" software does not recognise the camcorder yet it does accept the output from the card but that is only for stills. It looks like I might have to purchase an ieee.1394 card or another camcorder. Thanks for the suggestion Tony. Baz Bunkerbaz

i think, it's called i-Link DV cable(same).

well, try this.

need this cable- http://www.ebay.com/itm/Firewire-iLink-6-4-Pin-DV-Video-Cable-Cord-Lead-For-Sony-DCR-TRV460-DCR-TRV18-e-/130850954550

my desktop pc case has firewire input and my motherboard has firewire pins.

this is how i've transferred Di8 and Hi8 from TRV-740 to PD10, PD12 and PD14.

or if you have the DV connector on the VCR that has DvD recorder then this is an another way to

transfer. yup make a DvD then put into your PC or Laptop and capture from the optical drives to PD14.

this requires DV to DV cable.

or this cable - http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-5ft-USB-To-Firewire-iEEE-1394-4-Pin-iLink-Adapter-Cable/110919519809?_trksid=p2047675.c100005.m1851&_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIC.MBE%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D34875%26meid%3D3388b723374048db9012cc7c77eb9350%26pid%3D100005%26rk%3D3%26rkt%3D6%26sd%3D231302626627&rt=nc

Unfortunately I do not have, nor do I want to install, an ieee.1394 firewire card to my PC. I had one three PC's ago when using a Panasonic camcorder. I have searched all the forums and it seems I am one of many that would like to use the USB output on the Sony but there is no way it seems without the firewire. I think I will bite the bullet and purchase a new camcorder. Many thanks for the advice. Bunkerbaz

The Sony TRV series uses the USB for transferring images from the memory stick or you can use the camcorder like a webcam.

You need firewire to transfer video from the tape. Has always been that way. It's in the manual. There are some services that will transfer the 8mm tape to digital files for you if needed.

Otherwise, yes it's time for a new camcorder. Intel i7 4770k, 16GB, GTX1060 3GB, Two 240GB SSD, 4TB HD, Sony HDR-TD20V 3D camcorder, Sony SLT-A65VK for still images, Windows 10 Pro, 64bit

i haven't tried this one but if you don't have one of the two kinds(4pin or 6pin) of firewire then

this might be IT!

it's worth it for a small price.

i've backed up more than two decades of memories before the plastic tape gave out

and lost the tracking...

happy new year.

The end result is that I do NOT have a firewire and do not intend to get one as the Sony is old technology and was given to me by my son who seems to think I am so mean and miserly that I will not purchase a new camcorder.
Thanks guys.... Baz Bunkerbaz

have you clicked on any of the ebay links i've posted???

let's stop saying a FIREWIRE for a second, k.

let's say you need a mini-DV i-link cable to usb 2.0 adapter.

(because you said you have the USB(1.0,1.1,2.0,3.0) on the laptop and or your desktop with PD14,

on the Sony TRV-18 is mini-USB, only thing you can access is the memory card. in order to access the memory

card, you have to connect mini-USB on the Sony to USB on the PC. that is the ONLY thing you can do.

memory card will also record painful 320x240 .mpg videos, too.)

so, if you buy 'that' cable then this is what you'll do.

the mini-DV connector goes to the Sony TRV-18 DV IN/OUT and USB 2.0 connector goes to your laptop or desktop

with PD14. you don't need a firewire card!

when i replied to this post, i assumed you wanted to back up your old footages from Di8 and or Hi8 tapes

so that you can edit in the PD14; however, once connected you can also use Windows Movie Maker to edit.

anyway, happy new year

Hi, Bunkerbaz!

All is not lost if you have a capture card! Videocameras invariably come with a lead that connects them to a TV set via its A/V inputs to view the recently-shot contents, whether they're on VHS, Beta(older clunkier models) VHS-C, Video-8/Hi-8, Digital-8, DV or SD Card-based cameras, whatever the type, they'll ALL have that connection, one end terminating in a yellow(video) RCA plug and a white(mono) or red and white(left & right channel stereo) RCA plugs with the other end terminating in whatever style of connector was used in your camera's manufacture. This output can be routed through a capture card to your computer and you can capture your camera's content(obviously your camera has an inbuilt hard-drive) "real-time". This will suffice as a temporary measure until you a) find a way to connect your camera to your computer to resume digital content transfers, or b) buy that new cam-corder. Hope that's of use to you.

Cheers!

Neil.

P.S. Happy New Year!

Thanks Neil but I may have another option to explore. Because the Sony has the out put from the tape I am about to purchase a converter cable that MAY do the job.

Hi, Bunkerbaz!

In the event this device works(keeping fingers, toes, eyes and anything else that can be, crossed for you), would you be still purchasing a new camera? I'd recommend one with SD card storage of stills AND video. It occurs to me, through my own experiebce that cameras with internal hard-drives will behave exactly as if they were just hard-drives when you've hooked up the USB interface. If you've tried that approch and it works, just copy the wanted content from the camera's hard-drive to that of your computer(into an appropriately-labeled folder) then import the contents into PD14 from there.

Cheers!

Since not to mid Jan for delivery, think of plan B, this basic USB to 1394 cable as shown in the ebay links will not work for video transfer.

Since you don't want a 1394 card, USB capture device for current camera about the only suitable option.

happy new year.

i'm sorry to inform you that converter cable didn't work.

i've ordered the converter from hong kong and got it just now.

connected to the computer and it says that it does not recognize my Sony DCR-TRV740.

OS, w7 pro 64 bit, doesn't recognize it so Sony's PlayMemories doesn't either.

i doubt the windows photo gallery would...

do you have a VCR with i-link connector?

PepsiMan - I have a few ieee 4pin to 6 pin adapter cables. The 4 pins plugs in to the sony DV camcorder and the other end plugs into the IEEE firewire connector on the back of your pc. Check this out. It only cost a few dollars: http://www.frys.com/product/4085192?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG . For my dvr I used a 4 pin to 4 pin not 6 pin. They all work. Bottom line is you have to have a 1394 firewire card in your pc and not a usb to firewire adapter for camcorder use.
