Create a DVD menu with title/chapter thumbnails that only play the selected video chapter (solved!)

I want to create a DVD menu that displays 4 individual short videos (titles/chapters) and have thumbnail titles that I can click that will playback just the specific video and then return back to the DVD menu (and not play the entire timeline of the 4 concatenated videos).

I selected the “Play the selected title only” playback mode. If I click one of the thumbnails, the video will start playing at the start of the selected video but will keep playing the next sequential video instead of stopping and returning to the menu.

What am I doing wrong?

I have attached a few screenshots of the Create Disc process.

Thanks,

Sailor Guy

Hi Sailor Guy -

Forget about "chapters" because that cannot be done with chapters. The "Play the selected title only" option in playback mode only applies to titles (i.e. produced videos), not chapters.

  1. First produce each of your 4 video clips - in fact, if they need no editing, don't worry about producing.

  2. In Creat Disc, import each of your 4 titles (videos)

  3. Select the menu you want

  4. Click Playback mode & choose "Play the selected title only"

  5. Burn your disc. Done

The basic steps are show here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tWDTInl2TAY

Cheers - Tony

Tony,

Thank you for your help and making the distinction between a title (produced video) and a chapter.

Now I understand how a chapter is just a "timeline jump marker" and a title is an individual video file - and how they differ when referenced in a DVD menu.

I've been struggling with this issue for a long time and I'm finally on the right track.

Thanks again!

Hi, Sailor Guy!

This is a Power Director feature that truly amazed me when I came across it in PD8, and I certainly make use of it where I can, but I don'y try to "push" it by putting more than, perhaps, 3 "titles" onto a disc. Here's a step-by-step guide.

1.Upon opening Power Director(any version from PD8 onwards), go straight to "Create Disc".

2.Under the Highlighted "Content" tag is the icon(plus-symbol & Filmstrip,[PD8] may vary in later PD versions), click here to import your "titles".

3.Once you've imported your title, if you hold the cursor over it, you'll see four options - play; delete; edit title; set chapters. By clicking on the last-named, this will take you into the Edit Mode of Power Director, this is normal, Here, the Chapter Room will be automatically selected, set your chapters, either manually, at your own points in the title, or automatically by evenly-spaced chapters(choose your own number of chapters), or at given intervals(choose the length and as many chapters will be created to suit).

4.Click on the first "chapter" then play a bit until a desired scene appears to use as a "thumbnail", select it by clicking on the icon styled as a "portrait with arrow pointing down".

5.Click on "Create Disc" again, all your chapters are now in place, you can now(after a moment as PD updates the menu page) select the style of menu by clicking the tag, "Menu Preferences". Click on any one that may suit your fancy and make whatever adjustments you wish.

6.If you want to add more "titles", simple. Follow steps 1 to 4 for each new title.

7.Once all that setting is done, this leaves the "Playback Mode" to be set, this is where(for your purposes) you select Option C = Play the selected title only.

Hope that is of help to you.

Cheers!

Neil.

Neil;

If I understand this correctly, you are discussing putting say 3 separate movies on a DVD, with their own menues?

What Neil described above is one way but I prefer to import projects with the chapters already added. Any changes done on the titles in this project with the added titles will not be in the original projects.

Yes you are creating a multi level menu. Each of the 3 separate movies have their own set of chapter/titles pages. Each of those separate movies can also have different chapter/title pages. Found this out after a contributor (Jeff) replied to a post. It gets even better. Found out later that you don't need to create those menus/chapters/title pages at all for use. You can just use any chapter pages from any menu that you have. You can use the DZ if you want more variety. Experiment is the best experience.

Hi, Myk!

Yes! That's what I'm describing, provided of course the disc has capacity to hold the content. If you're putting anything more than 1 hour's worth of content on your DVD, it's worth hanging onto earlier versions of Power Director for this purpose, e.g., Power Director 8 will allow what I described, plus you can burn at DVD SP, which means you can fit up to 2 hours of content, and if you "push the envelope" a it, you can get up to 2 hours and nearly 30 extra minutes worth of content onto the disc. Sadly PD14 only burns at either DVD HQ or Smart Fit, and "Smart Fit" suggests to me that some part(s) of a clip might be jettisoned in order to fit the content onto disc, something which does not at all appeal to me. Of course, as Tomasc suggests, there are other methods. Perhaps Tomasc might like to give a step-by-step guide, as I've done, on how to achieve these other methods.

Cheers!

Neil
