PC Freezing, Mainly When Opening Project

I can't be sure this is entirely PD14's fault, but it definitely happens more when I'm using it. The most common time is as I open a project, usually it gets to about 75% progress on the bar and my whole PC will just freeze. I can do nothing but hold the power button down and start over.

I think it might have happened once when PD14 wasn't open, so maybe it's a hardware thing, an issue with RAM or something?

In another thread someone mentions PD14 needs 100GB of HDD space and my C is around 60GB. I have space on storage drives, or should I reinstall but on a larger drive?

Hello,

Can you specify all the details of your computer? Sounds like you have an old one? 60GB for the C HD is really not enough. Possibly a bottleneck effect and PD14 strangles the computer. One need a FAST computer with an actual NVidia graphic card or equivalent.

Can you not see the attachment? I think I did it correct, my DXDIAG? I have 60GB spare on my C drive, which is solid state, so only around 130GB in total. It's a reasonably high spec PC.

I could repartition the Solid State HDD I guess, it's around 480GB in total. I have a bunch of games on the other 310GB partition

I see freezes once in a while. Try Alt-Tab. Your pc may not be frozen and only PD is frozen. If that is the case then hold down the Control and Shift Keys and hit the Esc key. The Window task manager should open and allow you to close the application.

No, the whole PC freezes. I can't even turn on/off CAPS lock.

This appears to be a recent homebuilt pc. Do you have the case reset switch connected to the motherboard so that you don't have to hold down the power switch to shut down the pc when a freeze happens? There are some windows update failures in the diagnostics. You have some components installed on this pc that are pretty old and there appear to be no win 10 drivers available. Try this: The next time your pc freezes, disconnect that roccat mouse and then plug in a regular mouse to a different usb port to see if you can gain control on this pc with the mouse.

Non responsive usb ports can be a big problem. There are new gaming drivers available 3 weeks ago for the gaming keyboard. There are no win 10 drivers available for the Logitech QuickCam S5500. You need to know the model number of the motherboard and check if a later bios is available and install that. Check for all motherboard drivers available and install the latest ones that are compatible with win 10. Check for latest usb hub drivers as your usb ports freezes for some reason.

Check in the bios whether you allow the mouse to be active during startup before win 10 loads.

Some great info. Thanks.

How do you see which drivers are old and not compatible with Win 10? Shouldn't it(Windows) tell me about these somewhere?

I've done a fair few updates now, so here's a new dxdiag.

I didn't look into the webcam at this point. I don't really need it, so could try just unplugging for a while if my problems persist.

You can install just about anything in windows. Don't expect any version of windows to tell you that there will be a problem. The best way is to go to the manufacturer of that component and and check to see if it is compatible and that sometimes is incorrect as driver and software develpment has stopped on older devices.

The LWS 1.1 driver and software for the Logitech S5500 stopped at windows 7 many years ago. See this link and scroll down to see the chart for win 10: http://support.logitech.com/en_nz/article/3428 . You need to determine whether you want to install older devices and take the chances for windows instability.

Hi, AndyCr15!

I thought that figure, "PD14 needs 100GB of HDD" sounded suspicious, so I checked on the box my PD14 Ultra came in, and sure enough the figure was wildly inaccurate! PD14 requires memory space of only 1(that's one!) gigabyte, and 2 gigabytes or above, DDR2, for editing High-Definition videos. This info came of the box in which the installation disc for my PD14 Ultra was packed. This is why such software should ALWAYS be made available this way. If installing from a download, such vital information is not available to the end user. Whomever said "PD14 needs 100GB of HDD" was sadly misled.

Cheers!

The webcam does appear to be the cause of the crashes at the bottom of your DxDiag results. Since there are no Win10 drivers for it, try removing it from Device Manager and delete the driver software if that's an option, then reboot without the device connected.

The Event Viewer will contain very detailed info related to each of the bad hangs you've experienced, but it can sometimes be a challenge to decode the data and come up with the likely culprit.

A "shotgun" approach would be to uninstall PD14 and Quicktime, then reinstall each (in that order) and see if PD will behave better.

Thanks for all the help guys. I'm happy to simply replace the Webcam. I barely use it, just video chat with family from time to time.

Though it's a little off topic, but since I'm on a forum about video editing, can anyone recommend a replacement Webcam that would even be good enough to shoot footage for YouTube video's?
