Is there a ColorDirector4 preset to use for my GoPro4 Black instead of using ProTunes?

UPDATE: Get my GoPro preset here: GoPro Preset

or get a less saturated version here: ProTunes 1.3

Hello Skibum,

Welcome to the CDR forum, if you've not been welcomed previously. Welcome anyway! laughing

Protune for GoPros is a setting for shooting which gives you a more neutral colour profile, with more detail in shadows & highlights. It will look "flatter" than clips taken without Protune turned on.

I don't know of any presets that will work universally with clips shot using Protune.

CDR supports LUTs (LookUp Tables) which are typically used for colour grading with RAW footage. Some may work well with your GoPro clips.

Some LUTs are free & others are NOT. If you're interested, there's some more information about using LUTs in CDR here - https://forum.cyberlink.com/forum/posts/list/24640.page#210993

In fact LUTs are (in layman's terms) like presets... set of values (contrast, colour etc) that are applied to a video clip, but they're made for clips shot in a particular way or to achieve a particular "look".

There's a Protune LUT that is exactly the same as the Technicolor CineStyle LUT (just named differently). I'm wandering off course...

Did you say you weren't interested in enabling Protune? Oops embarassed

Protune is close to RAW video but is designed to be used in GoProStudio with the Cineform codec. You will see a Protune preset in the lower right box in GPStudio. Apply the preset and then export the clip.

My reasoning is a ProTunes clip is much larger and uses allot of resources when editing. I thought if I could just apply it afterwards it might be easier to edit.
With the new firmware, the Hero4 Black when using "GoPro Color" setting in Protunes brings out the colors much more than before. There is also a "flat" setting which I need to try, then color grade it in post.
I going to read up on LUT's.

Protune images are decompressed but not true RAW so conventional color correction may not work because it is a Cineform codec image. GoPro Studio uses Cineform and will give you the improved colors you are looking for using the Protune preset with the camera flat setting.

After playing around with differant settings, ProTunes set to "flat" seems to be the way to go.

I downloaded a LUX that is designed to be used with GoPro's ProTune. I have a file choice between .cube (recommended) and .3di. Both are supported by CD4. How do I install them into CD4? Thanks for your help.

I've made my own video preset and uploaded it onto DirectorZone here: ProTune Preset

It's to be used with the GoPro Hero 4 line of cameras with ProTunes settings of:

White balance:Native, Color:Flat, ISO Limit:400, Sharpness:Low, EV Compensation:0

It is much more realistic than the GoPro color setting with allot more detail.

Hello Skibum & AlS,

I'm not sure how I overlooked your later discussion embarassed Whilst I don't use a GoPro myself, your input here will be welcomed & appreciated by other GoPro users.

Skibum! Well done on creating a CDR preset that mirrors (and improves) what was previously available. I'll be sure to test it thoroughly with a friend's clips.

Thank you for your comment. I've learned allot about LUT's since you brought them to my attention in your previous post. My preset is for flat & native settings on the GoPro which allows the camera to pick up much more detail. The ProTune settings are much too vivid and over saturated for my liking. I tried to make my preset much more natural. Thanks again for all your help. I like to say "I know enough to be dangerous"

Hello Skibum,

A long time bump, followed by a slow motion response to one of your earlier questions about LUTS

Quote: I have a file choice between .cube (recommended) and .3di. Both are supported by CD4. How do I install them into CD4?

Even though I'm quite sure you've worked it out by now (!), here's a belated answer:

ColorDirector supports .3dl, .mga, .m3d, .cube and .csp format LUT files

PIX

Hekko Pix,

These presets are made for ColorDirector. To tell you the truth, I'm not sure what file format they are in.

To use them in ColorDirector.

Double click on the downloaded preset and it will be added to ColorDirector.

Open the file you'd like to color grade onto the time line.

Click on Adjustments, Then Presets

Scroll down to the bottom where it say "Downloaded Presets" and you'll see ProTunes

Click on the ProTune preset

You may find on some videos that the preset is slightly over satuated. Just turn the satuation done slighly

I didn't know you could import cube LUT's into ColorDirector. I'll have to give it a try.
I do also have a "cube" file LUT that I use in Resolve that pretty much does the same thing.

Edit: I just tried my cube file in ColorDirector and I feel it looks even better. It's not as satuated.

Thanks for that info.
