Best processor for Power Director using 4K video
[Post New]
I'm using Power Director 13 and will upgrade to 14 soon. I plan to buy a 4K video camera (probably Sony FDR AX 100) and was wondering if a computer with an Intel i7 CPU is adequate or would a Xeon processor be significantly better. Suggestions on graphics cards also welcomed.

Hi 4Kanyone?

I have a Panasonic GH4 which shoots superb video and I use PD13 to edit the resulting 4K material.

My machine copes very well with the heavy burden of 4K, and comprises an i7 4770T CPU with integrated HD graphics 4600 ( I have no dedicated card. My RAM is 16GB, but if you can have more, get as much as you can.

However, no matter how powerful your machine is you will no doubt experience stuttering, jumping and freezing on the timeline due, in the main, to very high bitrates. This can be very frustrating, but there are ways to get around the problem. You can use PDs own shadow files which unfortunately are very slow and can in some cases take hours to process before you can edit anything because you have to wait for ALL of the clips to process before you can start editing.

There is a very much faster way but slightly more complicated to use, see here. http://forum.cyberlink.com/forum/posts/list/46309.page

Now even better and much faster again is the "new kid on the block" Magic+PD. It's a very fast way of converting files with a lossless codec that's results in problem free editing and faster rendering times too. The final results are fantastic .

I thoroughly recommend you have a look at this thread and consider using this great little free program. It really will speed up your editing experience. http://forum.cyberlink.com/forum/posts/list/46177.page

I hope this information helps you

get the fastest CPU you can without breaking the bank.

I have Galaxy Note 3 H.264 4K, Samsung NX1 & NX500 HEVC H.265 4K videos

and PD14 does it very well compared to PD13.

I do NOT use shadow files when I'm rendering.

I'd recommend GTX950 or GTX960 as a discrete video cards for 4K processing.

Personally I don't think that Intel's Skylake or Broadwell is a significant desktop jump from Haswell (1150) yet. Benchmarks indicate marginal performance improvements so far so I'll hang on. New Intel 6, 8, and 10 core CPUs coming early next year.
The move to 4k is not cheap (cameras, Tv, etc) so your PC for editing should have enough power and storage.
Here is Intel plan for 2015/16.

Stick with Intel CPUs
I would also add
2X3TB 7200rpm HDDs in Raid 0 - fast and cheap.
A 256 GB SSD for Windows and Power Director.

The debate over the best Graphics card for PDR13/14 continues. Lots of info on the forum.

Or if you want best value today I think the Intel Core i7-4790K @ 4.00GHz is adequate for 4k.

And follow Robert's suggestion above.

Enjoy,
Al

Thank you for the info. Could you send a new link, as the one above is for this page. I'm interested in what the faster way to render you are referring to.

Thanks,

Thanks Al.

Confused of the U.K. here. The MagicPD link I entered in the above post seems to open the same page as Al quoted.

Anyway, gypsycomp, good luck with it, I'm sure you'll enjoy using the program.
