Power Director 14 (Trial) not burning dvds
[Post New]
Hi,

I downloaded the trial of PD 14, and tried it out with small files, and it seemed to work fine. So I attempted to make a different movie, a lot longer, The file size is 2.62GB, and I'm trying to burn to a 4.7GB dvd. It is using a dvd menu template i downloaded from Director Zone. But while I was editing the files I noticed the bottom dvd meter said, " 16984/4700" in blue turning to orange! How is it possible for a 2.62GB File to go to 16gb!? So i attempted to burn anyway and it told me the disc doesn't seem big enough, asking me am i sure its gonna work. So during burning It was stuck at 24%, for hours, so I canceled the burning and tried again in different formats, like svchd, and it eventually got stuck again, and said there was an error. Also it turns out i never produced the film, so after i produced it, and tried to burn to disc, I got to around 90% , and it ran into an error. (Attached Screenshot)

Can you help me with this?

Thanks

Hello, Elijah 1901

If you're burning to DVD so as to be played on a domestic DVD player, you need to ensure you're burning an MPEG2 file. As I suspect, you might be trying to burn an uncompressed AVI file and they can gobble up the gigabytes like King Henry VIII devours meat! Before you burn your video to DVD, check that it's an MPEG2 file, either DVD HQ or DVD SP(SP allows more content on a disc) and you should be okay after that.

Cheers!

Neil.

Hi Neil,

Thanks for your response. I tried setting it to Smart Fit, and it reduced the size to 9978/4700! But still did not burn correctly.. it again got to 92% and then failed. (attached picture). any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.smile

Hi, Elijah 1901!

Considering you're still experiencing difficulties in burning to DVD, then my last "throw of the dice" would be that maybe your computer has some hardware issues, or that your internal hard-drive may be a bit crowded with other files(Word Documents, MP3 Audio, other video content..... etc.). If you have a good-size external hard drive, cut and paste the larger-size files off your internal drive and onto your external drive, then give your internal drive a defrag. That might help. If not, take your computer to your service agent, he/she may be able to rectify your problem.

Cheers!

Neil.

Did you not get the caution again when you selected "Smart Fit" about size like you referenced in your OP? Basically the pic I attached?

I'm guessing your timeline is in the area of 3hr 45min. Verify by using the "End" key while in the timeline and looking at the timeline counter while in "Movie" mode. For a basic DVD burn as you are trying, a 4.7GB DVD holds about 60min worth of video. Nothing to do with the size of your initial file, the file needs to be encoded to meet DVD video specs. At this stage, simple duration the best overall indicator.

Most likely nothing wrong with your hardware, you are simply asking for PD to do something that it can't and is really not too practical. Options are, change to BD disc from DVD if you have a BD burner and player. Break the timeline down into ~60 min sections and burn each 60min chunk to a 4.7GB DVD, or use a DVD DL, 8.5GB and break into ~120min chunks.

Thanks for all your help! I was able to split the film into 2 separate dvds, part 1, part2. I also selected Smart Fit, and i was able to set the audio encoding format to Dolby Digital, which also help compress the size. After doing that, the dvd meter turned all blue, and it burned Sucessfully!

Thanks again!
