Cant figure out keyframes and trial almost up

I have been reading reviews and information about a few different video editing programs and have pretty much decided on Powerdirecter 13. I am having a lot of trouble figuring out how to use keyframes though. One thing I was trying to do was start with a normal photo and change to pencil sketch 2 by the end and I cannot figure it out. It is starting to hurt my brain and I feel like I have spent hours on it. Any suggestions? Today is the last day of my trial.

Hi Janinca2

They are many helpful tutorials about PD's features, and if you look at the list *here* you'll see several examples under the PiP Designer section

Thanks for the link. I think I have a great desire to do video editing but my mind just does not seem able to grasp some of this stuff. I can't seem to find a video that says to do a basic key frame go here and do this and have it look just like my workspace does. I wish there was a keyframe course somewhere that would walk me through it. Maybe I will see if I can find somebody to watch the tutorials for me and then teach me, maybe that will work. The sad thing is I know what a key frame is and how essential it is to video editing just dont know how to find where to put them to get them to do what I want or even how to put them anywhere. I have been trying and trying to get a basic zoom and can't even figure that out. I wonder if I would be better to go back to movie studio as I actually could work keyframes a little bit there. I hope to figure this out before my trial runs out. I wonder if I can renew a trial.

I must admit, I've had PD12 for more than a year. I watch the keyframe tutorials repeatedly and am generally able to figure out what I want to, but if I don't use PD for a month or so, I have to start learning all over.

I really like PD12 and am very impressed with its quality and flexibility, particularly given the price. But keyframes really stump me.

My problem is the tutorials. Because there is no audio (at least in English), I am forced to either read the text explaining what is being done, or watch the cursor as it moves around doing it. And many times, the whole thing moves so quickly that I end up watching it many, many times just trying to follow.

I wish someone would make a tutorial with audio and begin with a very simple operation, like pan and/or zoom, on a still photo. Then move on, little by little, building on that. Even explaining what the little diamonds do (at the bottom and in the video window) is something that I've never seen a clear explanation of.

Good luck (and my sympathy). Regards,
Dan

I understand how frutrsating it is when things don't "click." Maybe this will help. I assume you want your video to look something like this, right? (you may need to click the "watch on YT icon" at the bottom to see it full size)

If this is what you're looking for, there are just a few simple steps!

  1. Place two copies of your photo on the timeline. One on Track 1 and the other directly underneath it on Track 2.

  2. From the FX room, drag Pencil Sketch 2 and drop it DIRECTLY on the Track 2 clip. This won't work if you put it on the FX track!

  3. With the Track 2 clip selected, click on Effect and change the Pencil Sketch 2 settings so you get the effect you're looking for. You WON'T use any Keyframes here!

  4. Close the Effect Settings window and then click on Keyframe. Expand the yellow Clip Attributes setting, and drag the scrubber to the end of the clip

  5. Click on the white vertical diamond for Opacity (it will say Add/Remove current keyframe if you hover your mouse over it), which will set the value at 100 for the end of the clip

  6. Move the scrubber to the very start of the clip, and change the Opacity slider to 0. You can also click on the number "100" then type 0 and hit enter

  7. Exit Keyframe Settings and watch the preview. That's it!

You can experiment by adding additional keyframes, and maybe you'll find the right-click, Duplicate Previous (or Next) Keyframe feature helpful in delaying the start of the effect, or in holding the full effect for a while longer. For example, add a second keyframe farther down the track with the Opacity set to 0 to delay the start of the fade-in.

I'm short on time, otherwise I would have made a tutorial for you, but see if you can follow the steps I've spelled out and hopefully things will click as to how to get where you want to go.

Thanks for that optodata, that's much, much better than my suggestion.

I was putting the effect in FX track and there is no opacity selection doing it that way. You learn something new each day.

Thanks

Yeah, that killed me the first time I was trying to use FX because it seemed like the only way to use them was on and off at full strength. That's OK if you have a full scene change, but I couldn't figure out a way to do any kind of fade in or gradually change it.

The best thing happened when I asked on the forum and someone was kind enough to show me that you can drop multiple FX on any clip, and now I can pay it forward and help you and OP learn some new tricks! laughing

Thanks so much!! It worked. I did it. It was easy too. I really appreaciate that so much. Now I will play around and see what else I can figure out. Maybe a basic pan and zoom will be doable Yay!!

Congratulations!

Setting up a pan and zoom is the same process. With the scrubber at the start of the clip, just set the starting position and "magnification" - either manually with the Position and Height/Width controls - or by clicking and dragging the clip in the PiP Designer window, then click on the Add keyframe control.

Then move the scrubber to the end and change those same controls or click and drag to where you want the clip to end up, and the ending keyframes should be automatically added.

Good luck!
